The read
Rain in Raleigh, wind gusting to 26, and a noon kickoff at Carter-Finley. Wake Forest comes in 4-1 chasing 5-1, and NC State has won two straight at home and is trying to get its season back on track.
This game gets decided at the line of scrimmage, and Wake Forest has the edge on both sides of it. Start with Wake's offense. Outside the FCS Richmond game, NC State has allowed 5.34 yards per carry, and Louisville just ran for 231 yards at 9.2 a carry. Jake Dickert said this week he still wants his team to run the football more, and the forecast gives him every reason to. Ty Clark III and Deuce Lawrence both average 5.0 a carry or better. Gio Lopez gives them a third runner. Against power-conference defenses this offense runs for 4.28 a carry. Successful plays against NC State also go further than successful plays against Wake: the Pack allow 1.304 in explosiveness on those plays, Wake allows 1.042.
Now flip it. NC State runs for 3.69 a carry outside Richmond, and Jayden Scott is out. After Scott left the Louisville game early, Davion Gause carried 21 times for 69 yards behind a reshuffled line. That line now loses Yousef Mugharbil, third on the team with 339 snaps, on top of Spike Sowells Jr. for the season. Jimarion McCrimon and Kamen Smith are both questionable. Across from them is a front that has held power-conference teams to 2.79 a carry, with 12 sacks and 28 tackles for loss in those four games. Langston Hardy and Gabe Kirschke lead it. If NC State can't run, CJ Bailey has to win it through the air in rain and wind behind that line, and he has thrown an interception in four of five games.
Ball security widens the gap. Wake has three giveaways all season, and Lopez has one interception. Louisville outrushed NC State 231 to 120 last week, and the Pack survived on a 3 to 1 turnover edge. Winning that way gets much harder against a team that rarely turns it over.
Then there is the second half. NC State has been outscored after halftime in all four games against FBS teams, 53-87 combined, and gave back halftime leads at Vanderbilt, against App State and against Louisville. A patched line absorbing Wake's rush all afternoon fits that pattern. The secondary also has a new absence: safety Tristan Teasdell has played every game and is out this week. NC State now has to tackle Carlos Hernandez in space, and he carries 583 receiving yards, about 40 percent of Wake's passing, one week after Doeren counted 23 missed tackles.
NC State has real ways to stay in this. Bailey is averaging 300 passing yards a game over his last three. The Wolfpack went 9 of 17, 11 of 17 and 7 of 16 on third down in those games, and they have scored on their opening drive in four of five. Wake's two road wins came by 2 and 3, so the half point past the key number is the risk on this ticket. The season numbers still point one way. Against FBS teams NC State has gained 5.29 yards per play and allowed 6.85. Against power-conference teams Wake has gained 6.38 and allowed 4.81. In a rain game that rewards running the ball and stopping the run, the better team on both lines is laying 3.5 at close to even money.

QUARTERBACK
CJ Bailey is NCSU's projected starter
8.35 Y/ACJ Bailey is NCSU's projected starting quarterback. The October 8 matchup report discusses Bailey leading the offense against Wake Forest. It does not explicitly confirm the October 10 starter; this projection is based on game-specific reporting, not passing totals. 2026 line: 1253 passing yards, 65.3% completions, 8.35 yards per attempt, 8-4 TD-INT over 5 games.
Gio Lopez is WAKE's projected starter
9.13 Y/AGio Lopez is WAKE's projected starting quarterback. The October 6 game preview identifies Lopez as the catalyst of Wake Forest's offense entering the October 10 NC State matchup. It does not explicitly confirm the game-day starter; this projection is based on the preview's discussion of his role, not passing totals. 2026 line: 1333 passing yards, 65.1% completions, 9.13 yards per attempt, 9-1 TD-INT over 5 games.
TRENCHES
NCSU: 205.2 rushing yards per game to WAKE's 156
49.2 YPGNC State runs for 205.2 yards a game through 5 games, a jump from 146.5 last season, while Wake Forest is at 156, matching last year's 156.2 almost exactly. Wake's number is steady; NC State's is the new piece and could cool. If the Wolfpack can keep running at home, they control the pace, which tends to shorten games and keep scoring lower.
PACE & SCRIPT
WAKE @ NCSU carries a 57.5 market total
57.5The current fanduel total is 57.5, 6 points above the 51.5 median across 27 games with posted totals on this slate.
NCSU: 33:37 time of possession per game to WAKE's 27:45
5:52 TOPNC State holds the ball 33:37 a game through 5 games, up from 29:57 last season, while Wake Forest sits at 27:45, down from 29:03. That lines up with NC State's heavier ground game. If the Wolfpack control the clock again, fewer possessions usually mean a slower game and fewer total points.
TURNOVERS
WAKE: 0.6 turnovers committed per game to NCSU's 1.6
1 TOWake Forest is turning it over just 0.6 times a game, way down from 1.62 last season, while NC State is at 1.6, up from 1. Turnover rates swing a lot, and five games is a small window, so expect both to move back toward last season. On the road at NC State, Wake's clean ball security is helping now, but don't lean on it holding all year.
NCSU: 1.6 takeaways per game to WAKE's 0.6
1 TONC State has forced 1.6 turnovers a game across 5 games, Wake Forest 0.6. That is one extra possession a game in NC State's favour so far, though turnover numbers this early tend to even out. In this rivalry spot, NC State has the better chance to steal a short field, which helps more if the game is expected to be close.
MISMATCH
WAKE: 0.6 turnovers a game to NCSU's 1.6
0.6 VS 1.6Wake Forest has 0.6 turnovers a game through 5 games, NC State 1.6. Last season it was nearly flipped: Wake at 1.62, NC State at 1. Turnover rates swing a lot over five games, so both teams likely move back toward the middle. If NC State cleans it up at home, Wake loses the hidden edge it has had so far, so do not price this game as if those numbers are locked in.
COVERAGE
NCSU: 30.6% third downs allowed to WAKE's 43.5%
12.8 PPNC State allows conversions on 30.6% of third downs over five games, while Wake Forest allows 43.5% over five. Five games is enough to take seriously, though the sheet does not show the opponents, so schedule strength is an open question for both. At home, NC State has the defense more likely to end drives, and a bettor weighing this game can expect Wake to need longer, cleaner drives to score.
