The read
Noon in Morgantown is 9 a.m. on Arizona's body clock. Rich Rodriguez gets his old program on his own field, with a West Virginia team still looking for its first Big 12 win.
I respect this Arizona defense. It allows a 34.3% success rate, it blitzes from everywhere and it just held Cincinnati to 74 rushing yards. I have no illusions about West Virginia's defense either. It gave up 14.4 and 10.8 yards per pass attempt in its two Big 12 games, and its own coordinator called it the worst in the country. If this were just Arizona's season numbers against West Virginia's season numbers, I would lay the points.
Today's Arizona offense looks different. Tre Spivey is done for the year, and Giovanni Richardson and the third starting receiver are out too. Starting tight end Cole Rusk misses his third straight game. Noah Fifita's new receivers have played one half together, at home, with a lead already in hand against Cincinnati. Now they go on the road behind a line that let Fifita get sacked on the first play of three straight games. Away from Tucson this offense has been smaller: 25.5 points a game on the road, 41% success at BYU and zero points in the second half there.
The Arizona case leans mostly on what is broken across the field. West Virginia brings something that works. The Mountaineers run for 294.0 yards a game, and the run game held up when Big 12 defenses showed up: 5.1 yards per carry against Oklahoma State and 7.3 at Iowa State. Michael Hawkins Jr. has 11 rushing touchdowns. With the quarterback as a runner, West Virginia has one more ballcarrier than the defense can easily account for. Arizona's own defensive coordinator said that and the tempo make this a very different problem from the Cincinnati run game his defense just shut down.
Blitzing defenses live on negative plays and pay when the blitz misses. Arizona's defense gives up the most damage per successful play of any unit in this game, an explosiveness mark of 1.461, and West Virginia's offense rates at 1.291. Cam Cook has runs of 72 and 75 yards this year. DJ Epps has a catch of at least 30 yards in each of his last four games. In its one road game against a ranked team, at BYU, Arizona allowed 4.9 yards per carry and got 1 sack.
The tempo matters too. Arizona played 17 defensive linemen and linebackers against Cincinnati, and that rotation is how this defense stays fresh. A fast pace makes it hard to substitute, and Arizona is short three defenders today. The ball security edge also goes to West Virginia. Arizona is minus 4 in turnover margin with 3 takeaways all season, and Hawkins has thrown 1 interception.
West Virginia's pass defense is the real risk, and Fifita can find soft spots. But I trust the offense that is intact more than the one that was rebuilt this week. The hook on 3.5 means an Arizona win by a field goal still pays this ticket, and I want that cushion against a road favorite playing with backup receivers.

QUARTERBACK
Michael Hawkins Jr. is WVU's projected starter
9.81 Y/AMichael Hawkins Jr. is WVU's projected starting quarterback. October 9 game-specific reporting discusses Hawkins leading the offense against Arizona. The October 7 depth-chart report lists Hawkins OR Scotty Fox Jr.; it does not confirm an exclusive starter. 2026 line: 814 passing yards, 56.6% completions, 9.81 yards per attempt, 7-1 TD-INT over 5 games.
Noah Fifita is ARIZ's confirmed starter
8.37 Y/ANoah Fifita is ARIZ's confirmed starting quarterback. Arizona's October 5 official West Virginia preview identifies Fifita as its established starting quarterback leading the offense. October 9 game reporting discusses him throwing to this week's replacement receivers and quotes Doege identifying him as the team's quarterback. 2026 line: 1398 passing yards, 73.7% completions, 8.37 yards per attempt, 13-3 TD-INT over 5 games.
TRENCHES
WVU: 294 rushing yards per game to ARIZ's 155
139 YPGWest Virginia is running for 294 yards a game, nearly double Arizona's output, so the Mountaineers want to play on the ground and shorten the game. Last season WVU ran for 160.6, so this five-game jump is big and likely to cool off as the schedule toughens. Arizona sits near last season's 152.4, a steadier number. Expect WVU to try to control the clock, and if the run game comes back toward normal, their edge shrinks.
ARIZ: 79 rushing yards allowed per game to WVU's 168.4
89.4 YPGArizona allows 79 rushing yards a game over five games, and West Virginia allows 168.4. Arizona's run defense has been the better unit, though the sheet doesn't say what offenses it faced. West Virginia's defense is the one that has been run on. With Arizona on the road, its run defense has to hold up away from home, while West Virginia's front is the softer spot.
PACE & SCRIPT
ARIZ @ WVU carries a 60.5 market total
60.5At 60.5, this sits 9 points above the 51.5 slate median, so the market expects both offenses to score often and keep trading possessions. The sheet offers no team numbers behind it, only the gap. For it to crack, drives have to stall in the red zone or the game has to settle into long, clock-eating possessions. A slow first quarter is the early sign the number was too high.
ARIZ: 16.6 points allowed per game to WVU's 28.8
12.2 PPGArizona is allowing 16.6 points a game, a bit better than 19.3 last season, while West Virginia allows 28.8, close to its 30.8 last season. Both defenses look a lot like they did last year, which makes these numbers more believable over five games. Arizona's defense is the steadier unit. On the road at West Virginia, that gives Arizona a path to keep the game under control if its offense does enough.
ARIZ: 33:05 time of possession per game to WVU's 27:35
5:30 TOPARIZ is at 33:05 time of possession per game over 5 games; WVU is at 27:35 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 9. Last season ARIZ was at 30:57 over 13 games and WVU at 26:34 over 12 games.
MISMATCH
WVU: 294 rush yards a game to ARIZ's 155
294 VS 155West Virginia is running for 294 yards a game over five games, a big jump from 160.6 last season, while Arizona sits at 155, about where it was at 152.4. Arizona is steady, so the question is whether West Virginia's leap holds against better fronts. At home, a run game that strong lets West Virginia control tempo and possession. Arizona has to win early downs against the run or this game tilts toward West Virginia's pace.
COVERAGE
ARIZ: 213.2 passing yards allowed per game to WVU's 288.2
75 YPGArizona has allowed 213.2 passing yards a game over 5 games, West Virginia 288.2. The West Virginia number is the one to notice: that is a lot through the air, and the sheet gives no schedule context to excuse it. Arizona's passing game gets a softer target on the road, which is relevant for its quarterback's yardage and for the total.

SITUATIONAL
ARIZ: 296.4 team passing yards per game to WVU's 173.6
122.8 YPGARIZ is at 296.4 team passing yards per game over 5 games; WVU is at 173.6 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 9. Last season ARIZ was at 255.2 over 13 games and WVU at 188.9 over 12 games.
TEAM RECORD
Big 12 game: ARIZ 1-1, WVU 0-2 in conference
CONFERENCEWVU has lost both of its Big 12 games and hosts ARIZ, which has split its two. Two games each is a small sample, and no opponents are listed, so WVU's start may reflect who it played. WVU still has home field. Bettors can weigh ARIZ's slightly better league start against playing in WVU's building.
