The read

Saturday night at the Coliseum. A USC team still stinging from Oregon hosts a Washington side that has played most of its season at home against one of the softest schedules in the country.

The gap between these offenses is the widest thing on the field. USC succeeds on 53.5% of its plays at 0.307 PPA. Washington succeeds on 44.6% at 0.151. Jayden Maiava has 1,499 yards and 14 touchdowns, King Miller is running at 5.4 a carry, and USC turns each trip past the opponent 40 into 4.611 points. That production came against the 61st-ranked schedule, and the one top-50 opponent on it, Oregon at SP+ #8, still allowed 27.

Washington's record reads cleaner than the work behind it. Its schedule ranks 131st with no SP+ top-50 opponent on it. Minnesota beat the Huskies at home, held them to 279 yards and 40 on the ground at 1.5 a carry, and sacked Demond Williams Jr. seven times. The backfield is now without Jordan Washington, Jayden Limar and Quaid Carr. That leaves freshman Brian Bonner Jr., with 126 rushing yards, and Trey Cooley, at 2.2 a carry. A run game producing 107.3 yards per game with a 22.1% stuff rate will push this offense into passing downs, where Washington succeeds on 30.2% of snaps. USC succeeds on 46.7% of its own. I think that split decides the game.

The case for the dog is real, and I weighed it. SP+ grades the gap at only 17.8 to 12.1 and rates Washington's defense ahead of USC's. That front stuffs 30.5% of runs, and it faces a USC line without center Kilian O'Connor and with Hayden Treter doubtful. USC's defense gives up big plays, with a 1.363 explosiveness allowed figure. It also loses linebacker Desman Stephens II, third on the team in tackles, to suspension and safety Kendarius Reddick to injury. Oregon scored 28 points in the second half on this unit a week ago.

I side with FPI, which has it 14.792 to 4.353. The part of Washington that SP+ likes most is the defense, and those defensive numbers were built against the thinnest slate either team has faced. USC's offense has played without O'Connor all season. It still put up 42 on the Scarlet Knights and 27 on Oregon with Trent Mosley out of the box scores since Sept. 12. Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, with 25 catches for 372 yards, and Mark Bowman give Maiava enough to work with.

Washington's way back is chunk plays to Chris Lawson, Rashid Williams and Baron Naone against a secondary missing Reddick. I expect USC to keep that offense behind the chains often enough to make those shots the exception. At home, where USC is 3-1 with an average margin of 15, I'm laying the 9.5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • Jayden Maiava is USC's projected starter

    9.55 Y/A

Jayden Maiava is USC's projected starting quarterback. Oct. 1–2 previews discuss redshirt senior Maiava as USC's quarterback against Washington. ClutchPoints reports 1,499 passing yards and 14 TDs through five games. NBC Sports says he had his lowest completion rate (54.8%) against Oregon. SI (Oct. 2) says he has no injury designation. No formal starter announcement was found. 2026 line: 1499 passing yards, 70.1% completions, 9.55 yards per attempt, 14-2 TD-INT over 5 games.

  • Demond Williams Jr. is WASH's projected starter

    8.01 Y/A

Demond Williams Jr. is WASH's projected starting quarterback. Oct. 2 previews discuss Williams as Washington's quarterback for this game. The Daily Trojan calls him a junior dual-threat starter with 220 rushing yards this season. NBC Sports says he threw two interceptions and was sacked a career-high seven times against Minnesota last week. SI (Oct. 2) says he has no injury designation. No formal starter announcement was found. 2026 line: 1097 passing yards, 69.3% completions, 8.01 yards per attempt, 7-3 TD-INT over 4 games.

TRENCHES

  • USC: 165 rushing yards per game to WASH's 107.3

    57.8 YPG

USC is running for 165 yards a game over five games, about level with 169.5 last season, while Washington is at 107.3 over four, far below its 165.5 a year ago. USC's ground game looks like its usual self, and Washington's drop is the number with more room to move back up. At home with the steadier run game, USC is the side better placed to control the clock and the style.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • USC: 39.8 points per game to WASH's 28

    11.8 PPG

USC is scoring 39.8 points a game over five games, up a bit from 35.8 last season, while Washington is at 28 over four, down from 34.1. USC's number sits close to its recent level and looks repeatable, while Washington's drop is the one more likely to bounce back. At home, USC has the offense better placed to set the pace, so Washington probably needs to score with it rather than slow it down.

  • WASH @ USC carries a 58.5 market total

    58.5

Washington at USC is at 58.5, 6.5 above the slate median of 52, so the market expects a game decided by offenses. The sheet has no team data to back it. The under needs stalled drives and field goals in place of touchdowns. If the first quarter looks quiet, the slate median is the more natural landing spot for a game like this.

  • WASH: 16.8 points allowed per game to USC's 26.4

    9.6 PPG

WASH is at 16.8 points allowed per game over 4 games; USC is at 26.4 over 5 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 2. Last season WASH was at 18.7 over 13 games and USC at 23 over 13 games.

TURNOVERS

  • WASH: 2 takeaways per game to USC's 0.8

    1.2 TO

Washington forces 2 takeaways a game over four games, and USC forces 0.8 over five. Washington has gotten the ball back far more often. Turnover rates swing from game to game, so Washington's mark is more likely to come down than hold. In this road game, the takeaway gap favors Washington, but it is a weaker edge than yardage gaps.

MISMATCH

  • USC: 56.1% on third down to WASH's 34%

    56.1 VS 34

USC is converting 56.1% of third downs over 5 games, close to last season's 51%, while Washington is at 34% over 4 games, way down from 50.3% last season. USC looks like itself, and Washington's drop is likely to bounce back some. At USC, Washington needs to stay ahead on early downs, because long third downs have been where its drives die this season.

    Washington

I have USC laying 9.5, so I'm looking for the Washington player who scores even if the Huskies lose this game. Rashid Williams fits that.

Williams has 11 catches for 184 yards and 3 touchdowns through four games. That is the best touchdown rate on the Washington depth chart. Demond Williams Jr. has thrown 7 touchdowns, and Williams has caught nearly half of them on a modest target share. Dezmen Roebuck gets the volume, with 30 catches, but has only one score. Williams is the one who finishes drives.

The game script helps him. Washington's backfield is down to Brian Bonner Jr. and Trey Cooley, and the run game already stalls on 22.1% of carries. If the Huskies trail at the Coliseum, they will throw more, including near the goal line. USC's secondary is the weak spot I conceded in the side. It allows chunk plays at a 1.363 explosiveness rate and plays without safety Kendarius Reddick. Oregon scored 28 second-half points on this unit last week.

Part of my spread case is that Washington's shots will be the exception. That is not the same as saying they won't land. One explosive play or one red-zone throw cashes this ticket. At +200, I need him to score about one time in three, and his role on this team clears that bar.
