The read
Showers are rolling toward Tallahassee for a 3:30 kick. Virginia makes its first road trip of the season into Doak Campbell, facing a Florida State team that needs this game to stay in the ACC race.
Both adjusted rating systems rate Virginia as the better team. Virginia grades 14.4 on SP+ to Florida State's 5.7. Almost all of that gap is on defense, 18.1 against 26.5, while the offenses rate about even. A road number of 1.5 asks Virginia to be only slightly better than Florida State, and the ratings say the gap is bigger than that.
Florida State's injury list is what moves me from a lean to a ticket. Nichelson, Noah LaVallee, Daylen Green and Izayia Williams are all out at linebacker. Hobbs, Cromartie Jr., Howard and Thomas are all out in the secondary, and Green, Williams and Hobbs are done for the season. Chris Jones coming off the report helps. Even so, Florida State has few healthy linebackers left to face an offense its own coordinator, Tony White, describes as downhill and focused on running the ball. Virginia's line converts short yardage at 0.8696, and this Florida State front has allowed 0.9286 in the same spots. Virginia is missing two linemen and three running backs, so Middlebrook and Xavier Brown carry the load. The matchup still favors the team that wants to run straight at a depleted middle.
Then there is quarterback play with a wet ball. Pribula is completing 76.7% with 11 touchdowns and 1 interception. Daniels is at 59.4% with 5 interceptions, 3 of them at Alabama. Virginia has committed 2 turnovers and forced 7, while Florida State has committed 6. The National Weather Service has showers likely from 2 to 5 PM. Rain hurts the turnover-prone passer more than the accurate one, and Pribula gets to throw at a secondary missing four players.
The risks are real. Virginia's schedule ranks 121st, it has not faced an SP+ top-50 opponent, and its lone loss came 27-38 at home to the Mountaineers. Kromah is averaging 6.2 a carry, and Virginia is without defensive tackles Hammond and Richardson. Kicker Tim Hamann is out with no named replacement, which matters in a game priced this tight. I'm taking the spread at -104 over the moneyline at -118 because it's the cheaper price, and the only outcome that separates them is a one-point Virginia win.

PACE & SCRIPT
UVA: 13 points allowed per game to FSU's 25.3
12.3 PPGVirginia has allowed 13 points a game through four games, while Florida State is giving up 25.3. Last season Virginia allowed 19.6, so this defense is well ahead of its own recent norm, and four games is a short run that can flatter a unit depending on who it played. Florida State allowed 22 last season, so its number has drifted the wrong way too. Going into Tallahassee, Virginia's defense is the side more likely to set the tone, though a road trip is a fair test of whether 13 holds.
UVA: 33:46 time of possession per game to FSU's 28:02
5:45 TOPVirginia holds the ball about five and a half minutes longer than Florida State each game, and that matches last season, when Virginia was at 32:16 and Florida State at 28:46. With four games this year and a full season before it, this looks like real identity. Virginia wants long drives and fewer possessions, which tends to shorten the game and keep Florida State's offense on the sideline.
UVA: 40.5 points per game to FSU's 32
8.5 PPGUVA is at 40.5 points per game over 4 games; FSU is at 32 over 4 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 2. Last season UVA was at 30.8 over 14 games and FSU at 33 over 12 games.
MISMATCH
UVA: 13 points allowed a game to FSU's 25.3
13 VS 25.3Virginia's defense has allowed 13 points a game over four games, Florida State's 25.3. That is a big improvement for Virginia from 19.6 last season, while FSU is a little worse than its 22. Thirteen a game is a hard number to keep up, so expect Virginia to give up more as the schedule moves on. The defensive gap still favors a lower-scoring game on Virginia's terms in Tallahassee.
COVERAGE
UVA: 130.3 passing yards allowed per game to FSU's 290
159.8 YPGVirginia allows 130.3 passing yards a game through four games, which is stingy by any measure. Florida State has allowed 290 a game over its four, so one secondary is closing windows and the other is leaking. Nothing here says which quarterbacks Virginia has seen, so some of that number could come from soft schedule or opponents who chose to run. In this road spot, the question is whether the Florida State offense can test Virginia through the air better than the earlier opponents did.
UVA: 32.8% third downs allowed to FSU's 46.6%
13.8 PPVirginia's defense allows about a third of third downs to be converted, while Florida State allows nearly half. Over four games that is a real gap, though without opponent detail it could partly reflect who each team has seen. At Florida State, Virginia's offense should find third downs friendlier than the Seminoles will on the other side.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKDA'SHAWN MARTINANYTIME TOUCHDOWN OVER 0.5
My side in this game is Virginia, and the clearest way Virginia scores is through Beau Pribula's arm. He has 11 touchdown passes against 1 interception and is completing 76.7% of his throws. Virginia has only two rushing touchdowns from Pribula and Jekail Middlebrook combined, and Middlebrook is averaging 4.4 a carry. That is why I'm passing on Middlebrook at -114. This offense finishes drives by throwing.
Da'Shawn Martin has been the finisher. He has only seven catches, but three of them went for touchdowns, and he has caught more of Pribula's scoring throws than anyone else on the roster. Kameron Courtney has more volume with 15 catches, but only two scores. When Virginia gets close, Pribula has been looking for Martin.
The matchup helps. Florida State is without Hobbs, Cromartie Jr., Howard and Thomas in the secondary. Hobbs is done for the year, and Daylen Green and Izayia Williams are also out at linebacker, so there are fewer healthy bodies to cover in the red zone. Pribula is an accurate passer who doesn't need many throws to hit a short target in the end zone.
The risks are why this is a modest stake. Martin's touchdown rate on so few catches will come down at some point. Showers from 2 to 5 PM could push Virginia toward more running. And all of Virginia's production has come against the 121st-ranked schedule. Still, +220 implies about 31%, and a receiver who has scored in this offense at this rate, against a secondary missing four players, should clear that more often than the price suggests. I'm taking the plus money on the scoring target.
