The read

Homecoming night at Folsom Field. Colorado sends a new starting quarterback out against the No. 12 team in the country, with half the injury list belonging to the home sideline.

The ratings set the frame. SP+ has Texas Tech at 20.2 and Colorado at -3.3, and FPI has them at 16.977 and -0.633. Both systems open a gap wider than this number before Boulder enters the conversation. The efficiency profiles agree. Texas Tech succeeds on 50.5% of its snaps and scores 4.593 points every time it crosses the opponent's 40. Colorado succeeds on 39.8%, falls to 31.3% on passing downs, and turns its trips into 2.217 points. Colorado ranks 114th in scoring at 21.5 per game, and the gap between these offenses shows up most once drives reach scoring range.

The injury report is what pushed me off the fence. Isaac Wilson makes a first Colorado start after going 12 of 25 for 156 yards in relief at Baylor. Both tight ends, Zach Atkins and Charlie Williams, are doubtful, and Danny Scudero and Demetrius Hunter are out. Lamont Lester Jr. is doubtful, and Lester's 4 sacks and 6 tackles for loss made the front go. Preston Ashley is out at corner, with two former starting defensive backs also doubtful. Several of those absences are new this week, so Colorado's season numbers describe a healthier team than the one taking the field tonight. Add a special teams unit that has given up 141 punt return yards, most in the league, and Texas Tech should win the field position battle too.

The risks are real. Will Hammond has thrown 5 interceptions, three of them against Sam Houston. Thomas Castellanos is unavailable, which removes the packages Castellanos ran and leaves the depth behind Hammond unclear. Colorado's run defense carries a 31.6% stuff rate and can force Texas Tech into passing downs. Texas Tech's defense also allows 1.376 in explosiveness, which keeps a big Joseph Williams play live all night. The schedule has been soft too, ranked 96th, and the only top 50 win was a two point game against Houston.

Still, Colorado has to score to stay inside this number, and this offense averaged 11.3 points away from home with its full receiving corps. Tonight it has a first-time starter and no healthy tight end. Texas Tech has two backs who finish drives, a cleaner kicking game, and a defense allowing 35.3% success. I trust the deeper roster to pull away.

QUARTERBACK

  • Will Hammond is TTU's projected starter

    8.34 Y/A

Will Hammond is TTU's projected starting quarterback. On Oct. 3, 2026, Yahoo Sports/Roundtable said Hammond 'continues as the Red Raiders' starting quarterback' after leading Texas Tech to a 4-0 start while coming back from an ACL injury. On Sept. 30, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal called him the starter through four games, with 80-of-116 passing for 968 yards, 4 TD and 5 INT, including three interceptions against Sam Houston. Neither opened source quotes an official starter announcement for this game. Backup Thomas Castellanos is ruled out (see injuries). No opened current source discusses Kirk Francis, Lloyd Jones III, Holden Phillips or Stephen Cannon. 2026 line: 968 passing yards, 69.0% completions, 8.34 yards per attempt, 4-5 TD-INT over 4 games.

  • Isaac Wilson is COLO's projected starter

    5.67 Y/A

Isaac Wilson is COLO's projected starting quarterback. ESPN's Max Olson reported on Sept. 29, 2026, citing sources, that Wilson is expected to start after taking first-team reps. Deion Sanders said he had not announced the decision and that it would depend on practice. On Oct. 2, the Denver Gazette said Wilson is 'likely to make his first start as a Buff.' Julian Lewis was benched at halftime of the 23-13 loss at Baylor. No opened current source discusses Dominiq Ponder or Kaneal Sweetwyne. 2026 line: 153 passing yards, 51.9% completions, 5.67 yards per attempt, 1-0 TD-INT over 2 games.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • TTU: 36.3 points per game to COLO's 21.5

    14.8 PPG

Texas Tech is putting up 36.3 a game, close to the 39.4 it averaged over 14 games last season, and Colorado is at 21.5 after 20.9 last year. Both numbers line up with last season, so this gap looks like who these teams are. Colorado needs a slower, shorter game at home to stay close, and the more possessions there are, the more Texas Tech's scoring edge shows up.

MISMATCH

  • TTU: 48.9% on third down to COLO's 35.1%

    48.9 VS 35.1

Texas Tech has converted 48.9% of its third downs through four games, Colorado 35.1%. Tech was at 49.5% over 14 games last season, so this is who that offense is. Colorado is a bit below its 38.4% from last season. Tech's ability to stay on the field should hold up in Boulder, and long drives from them squeeze Colorado's chances to answer.

SITUATIONAL

  • TTU: 48.9% third-down conversion rate to COLO's 35.1%

    13.8 PP

Texas Tech converts 48.9% of third downs, almost the same as its 49.5% last season, so that is a stable strength. Colorado is at 35.1%, down from 38.4%. Tech's rate should hold, and Colorado's has room to tick up. In this game, Tech keeping drives alive means more snaps and more chances to wear on Colorado at home.

    Texas Tech

Texas Tech's touchdowns come from the backfield. Through four games Hammond has thrown 4 touchdown passes, while Cameron Dickey and J'Koby Williams have run for 7 between them. Dickey has 4 of those, a third of the offense's scoring from the names that matter here.

The usage shows how this backfield is split. J'Koby Williams is the explosive back, with 285 yards on 46 carries at better than six yards a pop, and he catches passes too. Dickey has 225 yards on 52 carries, about 4.3 a carry, yet he has more rushing scores. That profile belongs to a back who gets the ball once a drive reaches the goal line. That is the role I want on an anytime ticket, because yards don't matter and the short carries do.

The matchup lines up with that role. Texas Tech turns trips past the 40 into 4.593 points, so it doesn't settle for field goals once it gets there. Colorado is missing Lamont Lester Jr., whose 4 sacks and 6 tackles for loss made that front work, and the secondary is thin enough that Tech should move the ball into the red zone repeatedly. I have Tech pulling away in this game, and a team protecting a lead in the second half keeps feeding the back who closes drives.

There are risks. Colorado stuffs 31.6% of runs, and goal-line carries are where a stuff rate stings. J'Koby could break one from distance and take a touchdown Dickey would otherwise get. I also paid juice at -135, which implies about 57%. A back who has scored once per game on average, against a depleted front, with a two-touchdown favorite behind him, clears that number for me. I prefer him to J'Koby at -165 because Dickey has the clearer goal-line role and the cheaper price.
