The read
It's Homecoming in Fort Collins and the Pac-12 opener for two 2-2 teams, each led by a first-year head coach.
One mismatch decides this game more than any other: Oregon State's passing attack against a Colorado State secondary that arrives short-handed. Jesse Legree has topped 100 yards in all four games, with catches of 71, 75, 48 and 46 yards, and ranks second in FBS with 585 yards. Braden Atkinson has thrown for over 300 yards every week with just 2 interceptions. Colorado State faces them with safeties AJ Noland and Dagan Myers out and Elijah Mc-Cantos doubtful. Those depleted safeties have to back up a man and press coverage, in a defense Jim Mora spent the week simplifying so the Rams could "shrink the package." A scheme overhaul in one week, with backups at safety, against one of the most productive receivers in the country: I like that spot for the visitors.
The Colorado State defense is the weakest unit on this field by every measure I trust. It allows a 46.2% success rate to Oregon State's 41.3% and gives up 4.037 points per scoring opportunity to the Beavers' 3.308. Its SP+ defensive rating is 33.6, against Oregon State's 24.8. Opponents run for 230 yards a game on the Rams. An Oregon State line that gets stuffed on only 10.8% of carries should give AJ Newberry room to keep Atkinson on schedule.
The other side of the ball tilts the same way. Hauss Hejny is doubtful, and that likely takes away the quarterback run threat that produced 128 rushing yards. The probable starter, K'saan Farrar, threw for 344 at UTSA but ran for 4 yards on 5 carries. Farrar plays behind a line that already gets stuffed on 20.2% of runs, is missing Payton Stewart, and has Jayden Tuia doubtful. Oregon State has 14 sacks to Colorado State's 6, with Takari Hickle accounting for 3.5. Shephard's stated plan is to "disrupt the quarterback as much as humanly possible." Mel Brown is a home run hitter, but runs of 80 and 59 yards hide a 28-yard night on 9 carries against BYU.
The risks are real. Colorado State has the more explosive offense and a return game that has already scored on a 94-yard kickoff. CJ Blocker leads a secondary with 7 interceptions, and Atkinson will throw often. Oregon State is thin at corner, with Noble Thomas Jr. lost for the year and Trey Glasper returning from a foot injury. Both Beavers wins came against Montana and UTEP.
The number held at 6.5 all week, even after Thursday's report listed Hejny as doubtful and ruled out two safeties. The line sits under the key number of 7. Oregon State has the best defense in this game lined up against a backup quarterback, and the best receiver in this game lined up against a depleted secondary. I'll lay the points with the Beavers.

QUARTERBACK
Braden Atkinson is ORST's projected starter
8.66 Y/ABraden Atkinson is ORST's projected starting quarterback. OregonLive (James Crepea, Oct. 2, 2026) calls Atkinson Oregon State's starting quarterback and says it will be on him to keep his air yards from going to waste against Colorado State's opportunistic secondary. He is not on the Beavers' availability report (Coloradoan, Oct. 1). No game-day confirmation of the starter was found, so he is listed as projected. No current-week source discussed Maalik Murphy, Brady Jones, Isaiah Arriaza or Danny Leary. 2026 line: 1394 passing yards, 64.0% completions, 8.66 yards per attempt, 11-2 TD-INT over 4 games.
TRENCHES
ORST: 142.8 rushing yards allowed per game to CSU's 230
87.3 YPGOregon State allows 142.8 rushing yards a game over four games, which is middling, while Colorado State has given up 230 a game, which is a lot. Both run defenses can be moved, Colorado State far more. With four games each and no opponent detail, the Colorado State number may come partly from tough matchups, but 230 a game is hard to explain away. Oregon State's run game is the angle to watch here, especially in a game where both sides may be able to grind out yards.
CSU: 172 rushing yards per game to ORST's 97.3
74.8 YPGColorado State is running for 172 yards a game through four games, a big jump from 108.3 last season, while Oregon State has fallen to 97.3 after 123.8 last year. Four games is a small window, so some of that is who each team has played. If both numbers are real, Colorado State can lean on the ground game at home and shorten the game, which matters most if Oregon State needs to keep pace through the air.
PACE & SCRIPT
ORST @ CSU carries a 62.5 market total
62.5Oregon State at Colorado State sits at 62.5, tied for the highest total on a slate where the middle game is 52. The market is pricing a lot of quick scoring from both sides, and the sheet offers no team numbers to explain why. A total this high needs both offenses to finish drives, so a couple of empty red-zone trips early is the kind of start that pulls a game back toward the slate norm.
ORST: 23 points allowed per game to CSU's 34.3
11.3 PPGOregon State has allowed 23 points a game through four games, an improvement on 29.4 last season, while Colorado State is giving up 34.3, worse than its 30.8 a year ago. Four games is a short run, but both moves fit with last season's direction for each defense. On the road, Oregon State has the steadier unit, and Colorado State's defense is the one that has to prove it can get stops.
TURNOVERS
CSU: 2.5 takeaways per game to ORST's 1.5
1 TOColorado State is forcing two and a half turnovers a game, a full one more than Oregon State. Four games of takeaways is a streaky stat that usually settles back toward average. Extra possessions can still decide a close home game, but bettors should expect Colorado State's pace to slow rather than build on it.
MISMATCH
CSU: 172 rush yards a game to ORST's 97.3
172 VS 97.3Colorado State has run the ball far better than Oregon State through four games, 172 yards a game to 97.3. Both numbers flipped from last season, when Oregon State ran for 123.8 and CSU for 108.3, so four games is doing a lot of the work here. If CSU's ground game is real, it lets them shorten the game at home and keep Oregon State's offense on the sideline. Watch early whether CSU can move it on the ground before buying the full gap.

SITUATIONAL
ORST: 357.8 team passing yards per game to CSU's 297
60.8 YPGOregon State is throwing for 357.8 yards a game, up from 225.8 last season, and Colorado State is at 297, up from 215.9. Both teams are passing far more than a year ago over four games each, which points to a faster, more open game. Some of that will cool off. Both sides leaning on the pass makes this a spot where yardage and scoring can pile up.
CSU: 35.5 penalty yards per game to ORST's 68.8
33.3 YDSORST is at 68.8 penalty yards per game over 4 games; CSU is at 35.5 over 4 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 2. Last season ORST was at 49.9 over 12 games and CSU at 56.3 over 12 games.
