The read

Homecoming in Lincoln. A 4-0 Nebraska team off its best start since 2016 hosts a Maryland program whose head coach is on the hot seat and whose 54-3 home loss to UCLA is one week old.

This number turns on one matchup: Nebraska's run game against a Maryland front that has already been run over twice. Nebraska averages 236.5 rushing yards a game and gets stuffed on only 15.2% of its carries. Jamal Rule is averaging 7.9 yards a carry, and Mekhi Nelson is behind him at 5.4. Maryland's season run defense looks fine until you split it. Of the 474 rushing yards Maryland has allowed all season, 397 came against Virginia Tech and UCLA. The first two real offenses Maryland faced found the same weakness, and running the ball is what Nebraska does best.

Maryland's offense makes the problem worse. Its line gets stuffed on 23.4% of carries, and with its top backs sidelined it ran 30 times for 39 yards against UCLA. Harry Dalton III is out. The starter returning from a three-game absence has no reported workload. When Maryland falls behind the sticks, its success rate on passing downs is 30.9%. That is exactly where a Nebraska defense with 15 sacks and a 0.204 havoc rate wants this game to be played. Malik Washington was clean and efficient in the two games before UCLA, and Mike Locksley has trimmed the playbook to protect the sophomore. A simpler offense can cut the turnovers. It also caps an attack whose explosiveness rating of 1.239 already trails Nebraska's 1.439.

The finishing gap is what I keep coming back to. Nebraska scores 5.192 points per scoring opportunity and allows 2.611. Maryland scores 3.433 and allows 4.150. When drives reach the 40, one side is turning them into touchdowns and the other is settling for field goals or less. That is how a lead stretches past two scores. Anthony Colandrea has 10 touchdown passes against 1 interception, and Nebraska has committed one turnover all season. Maryland has committed five.

The case against this ticket is real: - Schedule. Nebraska's schedule ranks 120th, and Michigan State is the only power-conference team it has beaten. - Ratings. SP+ has Nebraska at 16.9 and Maryland at 3.9, a gap that lands a bit inside this spread. FPI's 15.952 against -1.69 lands beyond it. - Defensive absences. Nebraska listed three linebackers, a defensive lineman and a defensive back out this week, and the reporting doesn't say how long those absences have run. If they are new, Maryland faces a thinner middle than the defense that has allowed a 36.6% success rate. - Key number. Fourteen is a key number, and a two-touchdown Nebraska win loses this ticket.

I'm laying the points anyway. Running the ball is what beat Maryland the last two weeks, and it is what Nebraska does best. Maryland hasn't shown it can keep scoring once it falls behind schedule.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • Malik Washington is MD's projected starter

    6.76 Y/A

Malik Washington is MD's projected starting quarterback. On Sept. 29, SI's Know Your Foe called sophomore Malik Washington Maryland's starter (101-of-154, 1,034 yds, 6 TD, 4 INT in four games; four INTs vs. UCLA, two returned for TDs). On Sept. 29, ESPN named him the starter who threw four INTs vs. UCLA. On Oct. 2, SI's preview said he has thrown for over 1,000 yards with 6 TD and 4 INT. No source confirms the game-day start. 2026 line: 1034 passing yards, 66.0% completions, 6.76 yards per attempt, 6-4 TD-INT over 4 games.

  • Anthony Colandrea is NEB's projected starter

    8.69 Y/A

Anthony Colandrea is NEB's projected starting quarterback. On Sept. 28, SI described Colandrea as Nebraska's starter. Rhule said he wants him to protect himself better. On Sept. 29, SI's Know Your Foe called him the starter (68-of-104, 904 yds, 10 TD, 1 INT; 141 rush yds, 2 TD). On Oct. 2, SI's preview featured him as the QB working with OC Dana Holgorsen. On Oct. 3, Cornhuskers Wire reported no concerns about him. No source confirms the game-day start. 2026 line: 904 passing yards, 65.4% completions, 8.69 yards per attempt, 10-1 TD-INT over 4 games.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • NEB: 12 points allowed per game to MD's 25.8

    13.8 PPG

Nebraska is allowing 12 points a game through four games, half of the 24.6 it gave up last season. Maryland is at 25.8, almost the same as its 26.5 last year. A drop that big over four games points partly to the schedule, so expect Nebraska's number to rise. Maryland's offense will give a better sense of whether this Nebraska defense has truly improved.

  • NEB: 42.5 points per game to MD's 32.3

    10.3 PPG

MD is at 32.3 points per game over 4 games; NEB is at 42.5 over 4 games. Those are this season's games through Oct 2. Last season MD was at 23.5 over 12 games and NEB at 28.7 over 13 games.

TURNOVERS

  • NEB: 0.25 turnovers committed per game to MD's 1.25

    1 TO

Nebraska has turned it over just 0.25 times a game through four games, down from 0.85 last season, while Maryland sits at 1.25, near its 1.17 a year ago. Maryland's rate looks stable, and Nebraska's is about as low as it gets over four games, so expect it to rise. At home, Nebraska winning the turnover battle is likely, though by a smaller margin than this season's numbers suggest.

MISMATCH

  • NEB: 236.5 rush yards a game to MD's 148.3

    236.5 VS 148.3

Nebraska is running for 236.5 a game over 4 games, up from 145.9 last season, and Maryland has also improved to 148.3 from 104.3. Both teams are running better than last year, so the gap is partly Nebraska riding a hot start that may cool. At home, Nebraska grinding on the ground keeps Maryland's offense off the field and shapes the pace of the game.

    Nebraska

I have Nebraska winning by more than two touchdowns, so I want a piece of the offense that finishes drives. Kwazi Gilmer is the receiver Anthony Colandrea looks for when it counts. Colandrea has thrown 10 touchdown passes through four games, and Gilmer has caught 4 of them. He also leads the team with 18 catches for 240 yards. No other Nebraska pass-catcher matches that combination of volume and scoring. Jacory Barney Jr. is closest, with 16 catches, 222 yards and 2 touchdowns. Luke Lindenmeyer and Nyziah Hunter have combined for 15 catches and no scores.

The game setup helps him. Nebraska turns its scoring opportunities into 5.192 points each, which means drives that reach the 40 usually end in touchdowns, not field goals. Maryland allows 4.150 points per opportunity and gave up 54 at home to UCLA last week. Nebraska should get plenty of trips inside the 40. Maryland also has to respect a run game averaging 236.5 yards a game. That pulls defenders toward the line and leaves single coverage on the outside near the goal line, which is where Colandrea has been throwing to Gilmer.

The risk is the same edge I'm betting on in the spread. If Jamal Rule and Mekhi Nelson are ripping off big gains, Nebraska can punch in its touchdowns on the ground and Gilmer can catch five passes without reaching the end zone. At -120 I need him to score about 55% of the time. He is the top target in an offense projected to score several touchdowns against a defense that just collapsed, so I'm comfortable with that price. It is a fair number with a small edge. I'm not calling it a smash.
