The read
Rain and thunder are stacking up over Williams-Brice for a 4:15 kickoff. The No. 24 Wildcats walk into Columbia to face a Gamecocks team that has lost two straight and badly needs this one at home.
Strip away the logos and these two teams rate almost dead even, 8 to 7.5 in SP+. So the question is who wins the way this particular game gets played, and I keep landing on Kentucky.
Start with the defenses. Kentucky allows 0.016 points per play and South Carolina allows 0.151. Kentucky gives up 3.577 points per scoring opportunity and South Carolina gives up 5.059. Kentucky's explosiveness allowed is 1.190 against South Carolina's 1.556. When opponents get deep against the Gamecocks, they finish with touchdowns.
Kenny Minchey arrives built to cash those chances. He is completing 68.3 percent at 8.67 yards per attempt, with 8 touchdowns and 1 interception, and Kenny Darby and Willie Rodriguez give him steady targets.
The South Carolina defense on the field today is also thinner than the one that produced those numbers. Dylan Stewart is suspended. Kobby Sakyi-Prah and A.J. Holloway are out, and so is Jalewis Solomon in the secondary. Those are fresh holes at edge, linebacker and defensive back. With those players available, this group was already 0 and 2 against SP+ top 50 opponents, giving up 41 to Mississippi State and 49 at Alabama.
The turnover matchup is the piece I trust most. LaNorris Sellers has thrown 4 interceptions, three of them in two SEC games. Kentucky has 6 interceptions and 22 passes defended, and has forced 8 turnovers to South Carolina's 2. With a 60 percent rain chance, every loose ball and tipped pass gets more expensive, and Kentucky is the team taking the ball away.
The threat is real. South Carolina runs for 262.0 yards a game behind Matt Fuller and Sellers' legs, and its front stuffs 24.3 percent of runs. Kentucky is short at linebacker with Alex Afari Jr. ineligible and Tavion Wallace out, and the rain favors a ground game. Two things soften that. Kentucky's regular starter is back from the ejection, with Grant Godfrey still anchoring the group. And part of the Gamecocks' rushing total was built against Kent State and Towson. Cole Marszalek being out at long snapper in wet weather is the worry I carry into this ticket.
The résumés point the same way. Kentucky won at Texas A&M and sits 11th in strength of record, while South Carolina sits 88th. The ratings call this game a coin flip, and the price pays plus money on the team with the cleaner quarterback, the better defense on a per play basis and the turnover edge. I'll back the Wildcats to win it outright.

QUARTERBACK
Kenny Minchey is UK's projected starter
8.67 Y/AKenny Minchey is UK's projected starting quarterback. October 2 game preview discusses Kentucky's offensive plan with Minchey against South Carolina. This supports a projected start, without inferring the role from passing totals; explicit game-day confirmation was not retrieved. 2026 line: 876 passing yards, 68.3% completions, 8.67 yards per attempt, 8-1 TD-INT over 4 games.
LaNorris Sellers is SC's projected starter
7.18 Y/ALaNorris Sellers is SC's projected starting quarterback. October 2 game preview discusses Sellers leading South Carolina's offense against Kentucky. September 30 coordinator comments discuss his preparation and leave open possible action for Cutter Woods, without announcing a starting change. Explicit game-day starter confirmation was not retrieved. 2026 line: 833 passing yards, 62.1% completions, 7.18 yards per attempt, 6-4 TD-INT over 4 games.
TURNOVERS
UK: 2 takeaways per game to SC's 0.5
1.5 TOKentucky forces 2 takeaways a game over four games, and South Carolina forces 0.5. Kentucky's defense has been taking the ball away, and South Carolina's has not. Turnovers bounce around a lot, so four games is not enough to call Kentucky a ball-hawking unit for sure. On the road at South Carolina, the edge gives Kentucky a few extra chances, which matters most in a game expected to be close.
MISMATCH
SC: 42.6% on third down to UK's 23.1%
42.6 VS 23.1South Carolina has converted 42.6% of its third downs through four games, Kentucky just 23.1%. Last season it was the reverse, Kentucky at 40.3% and SC at 31.9%, so both teams are running far from their prior form. Third-down rates bounce around over four games and Kentucky's should climb some. For now, Kentucky's drives stalling early at SC is the likeliest way this game gets away from them.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKKENNY DARBYANYTIME TOUCHDOWN OVER 0.5
If Kentucky wins this game the way I think it does, Kenny Darby is the receiver most likely to put a score on the board, and +130 pays plus money for that.
Darby is the big-play target in this offense. He has 13 catches for 226 yards and 2 touchdowns through four games, which works out to more than 17 yards a catch. Willie Rodriguez has more receptions, but his are the short, chain-moving kind, and he hasn't scored yet. When Kenny Minchey pushes the ball downfield at 8.67 yards per attempt, Darby is usually the one he's throwing to.
That role fits this opponent. South Carolina gives up explosive plays at a 1.556 clip and allows 5.059 points per scoring opportunity, so when teams get deep on the Gamecocks, they score touchdowns instead of settling for field goals. This week the secondary is also missing Jalewis Solomon, and Dylan Stewart's suspension takes away their best pass rusher. A thinner pass rush gives Minchey more time to wait for the deep route to open, and a short-handed secondary is less likely to catch up once it does.
There are two real risks. First, there is a 60 percent chance of rain, and a wet ball cuts down on deep throws. If conditions are bad, Kentucky may run more. Second, CJ Baxter has 5 rushing touchdowns, so he is the likely finisher near the goal line, and Darby probably needs to score from outside the red zone. Those concerns are why I passed on Jason Patterson at -135, who splits carries with Baxter, and why my confidence here is modest. Still, a turnover in Kentucky's favor can set up a short field, and one well-timed shot down the sideline is enough to cash this ticket.
At +130, the book implies about a 43 percent chance. Given his share of Kentucky's big plays and this matchup against a depleted secondary, I think his chances are a little better than that.
