The read
Homecoming at Beaver Stadium brings Wisconsin to town for both teams’ Big Ten opener. Penn State enters unbeaten, while the Badgers arrive after their most productive scoring game of the season.
I’m backing Penn State because its defensive disruption creates the clearest path to separation. Through three games, the Nittany Lions have stopped 25.3% of opposing carries at or behind the line and allowed a 29.7% offensive success rate. My expectation is that Wisconsin will struggle to sustain enough manageable downs, leaving Colton Joseph facing the varied pass-rush matchups Matt Campbell described in D’Anton Lynn’s defense.
Joseph’s mobility gives Wisconsin an answer, and probable returnees Abu Sama III and Malachi Coleman broaden its options. But Joseph’s production against Eastern Michigan does not settle this matchup. Against Notre Dame, he finished with 217 passing yards and three net rushing yards. Wisconsin’s latest scoring outburst also included defensive and special-teams touchdowns. I expect its offense to face considerably more resistance here.
Penn State must replace meaningful production with Koby Howard out. His 344 receiving yards came across the same three games that established the offense’s early numbers, so those results cannot be carried forward unchanged. Wisconsin’s defense, ranked 21st in opponent-adjusted SP+, makes that loss consequential.
I still trust Penn State’s remaining personnel to sustain drives. Rocco Becht has nine touchdown passes and no interceptions, with Chase Sowell, Brett Eskildsen and Benjamin Brahmer available as receiving options. Carson Hansen and Quinton Martin Jr. give the offense additional ways to advance against a Wisconsin front that has stopped just 9.1% of opposing carries at or behind the line.
The finishing matchup pushes me toward laying the points. Penn State has averaged 4.240 points per scoring opportunity, compared with Wisconsin’s 3.000. Those opportunities begin when a drive reaches the opponent’s 40. My read is that Penn State can turn more of its sustained possessions into meaningful scoring while making Wisconsin work harder for its chances.
Wisconsin has faced the tougher schedule, and that deserves weight. Even after opponent adjustment, SP+ ranks Penn State 12th and Wisconsin 56th. Combined with the defensive matchup and the remaining offensive options, that supports Penn State creating enough separation to cover -9.5.

The research

QUARTERBACK
Colton Joseph is WIS's projected starter
8.85 Y/AColton Joseph is WIS's projected starting quarterback. Wisconsin's official game-week preview identified Joseph as the quarterback at the helm and said he would enter his first Big Ten game, but it did not contain an explicit starter announcement. 2026 line: 752 passing yards, 63.5% completions, 8.85 yards per attempt, 5-2 TD-INT over 3 games.
Rocco Becht is PSU's projected starter
11.73 Y/ARocco Becht is PSU's projected starting quarterback. Penn State's current-week coach conference discussed the offense's established rhythm with Becht entering Wisconsin week, but the retrieved sources did not explicitly publish a game-specific starter declaration. 2026 line: 751 passing yards, 70.3% completions, 11.73 yards per attempt, 9-0 TD-INT over 3 games.
TRENCHES
PSU: 199 rushing yards per game to WIS's 138.7
60.3 YPGPenn State is running for 199 a game through three games, up from 174.4 last season. Wisconsin is at 138.7, up from 116.7. Both have climbed, but Penn State was the stronger ground team last season too, so its edge looks real. At home, Penn State is likely to dictate the game on the ground, which can shorten it and favors lower totals.
PACE & SCRIPT
WIS @ PSU carries a 43.5 market total
43.5The current fanduel total is 43.5, 11 points below the 54.5 median across 41 games with posted totals on this slate.
PSU: 7.3 points allowed per game to WIS's 20
12.7 PPGPenn State has allowed 7.3 points a game through three games, a steep drop from 20.5 last season. Wisconsin is at 20, near its 21.6 from a year ago. Three games of elite defense usually come partly from weak opponents, so Penn State's number is the one likely to rise. At home against a Wisconsin offense it likely hasn't yet faced the equal of, it should still be the side dictating a low-scoring game.
MISMATCH
PSU: 7.3 points allowed a game to WIS's 20
7.3 VS 20Penn State has allowed 7.3 points a game through 3 games, far below 20.5 last season. Wisconsin allows 20, near its 21.6 from last year, so that one looks steady. Penn State's number almost certainly reflects early opponents and should rise against a Big Ten offense. Expect Wisconsin to score more than Penn State's early opponents did, even if the Nittany Lions' defense stays the stronger unit.
COVERAGE
PSU: 90 passing yards allowed per game to WIS's 180.3
90.3 YPGPenn State has allowed just 90 passing yards a game over 3 games, half of Wisconsin's 180.3. A number that low over three games often means opponents gave up on the pass or were run-heavy by design, and the sheet doesn't say which. If Wisconsin leans on the ground game, Penn State's pass defense may never really get tested, so the more useful number here is what Wisconsin allows through the air.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKROCCO BECHTPASSING TOUCHDOWNS OVER 1.5
I’m taking Becht over 1.5 passing touchdowns at plus money. He has thrown nine scores without an interception through three games, and Penn State’s advantage in sustaining and finishing drives should give him multiple opportunities near the goal line.
Koby Howard’s absence removes a major producer, but it does not leave Becht dependent on one replacement. Benjamin Brahmer already has three receiving touchdowns, while Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen have also scored. That distribution matters against a capable Wisconsin defense because Penn State can create favorable matchups from several alignments.
Wisconsin’s defensive quality keeps my confidence measured, and Penn State can finish possessions on the ground. Still, this price only needs Becht to convert two of the scoring chances I expect the Nittany Lions to generate. His early efficiency and the available receiving options make +118 worth taking.
