The read
Noon on ESPN, dry skies and upper-70s warmth at L&N Stadium. No. 16 Louisville closes a three-game homestand against a Wake Forest team that spent the week hearing about its penalties.
On a neutral field, the ratings put these teams well short of this number apart. Louisville is 25th in SP+ at 13.3 and Wake Forest is 63rd at 3.6, and FPI agrees. Twelve and a half asks home field and the matchup to cover the rest. The matchup is where I think this number gets stretched.
Louisville's offense is excellent by every efficiency measure: 6th nationally in points added per play, with zero turnovers. The rushing totals are built differently than they look. The line carries a 19.1% stuff rate, and the damage comes in the open field. Against SMU, Keyjuan Brown turned 10 carries into 163 yards on the strength of touchdown runs of 58 and 53. Wake Forest ranks 5th of 138 in explosiveness allowed. This defense gives up plenty of successful plays and will again today, but it has not let people break long ones. When Louisville has to march 70 yards instead of hitting 60 in one snap, Wake gets more chances at a stall or a field goal. Louisville also plays with three offensive linemen ruled out, and its pass protection has been flagged as a concern against Langston Hardy and Gabe Kirschke.
The other side of the ball is what moves me most. Louisville's defense ranks 74th in success rate allowed, 85th in points added allowed, and 106th in points allowed per scoring opportunity. It has three sacks in three games and an 11.8% stuff rate. The Cardinals have covered for all of that with six takeaways and a +6 margin, and I won't count on a pace like that holding. Without it, this is a defense that gave up 41 to Ole Miss and 31 to SMU. Gio Lopez is confirmed to play, the offense converts passing downs at 41.2% (14th nationally), and Carlos Hernandez has 19 catches for 302 yards. Wake Forest will get its possessions, and a total of 57.5 points to a game with enough scoring for the underdog to trade blows.
Wake Forest carries real risk. The defense is 128th in success rate allowed, the protection broke down against Miami, and 13 penalties in that game are the kind of mistakes that sink a cover on the road. Still, that loss came against the 7th-ranked SP+ team: Wake trailed 24-7 at halftime and lost 33-20. Louisville's two games against rated opponents ended 38-41 and 41-31, and both of those teams rate higher than Wake. I'll take the points.

QUARTERBACK
Gio Lopez is WAKE's confirmed starter
8.43 Y/AGio Lopez is WAKE's confirmed starting quarterback. Listed questionable on Wednesday's injury report, upgraded to probable Thursday; head coach Jake Dickert said Sept. 25 that Lopez 'didn't come up here with a wheelchair; he's gonna be ready to go' and had 'a great day of practice,' confirming he will play Saturday at Louisville. 2026 line: 843 passing yards, 63.0% completions, 8.43 yards per attempt, 6-1 TD-INT over 3 games.
Lincoln Kienholz is LOU's confirmed starter
11.18 Y/ALincoln Kienholz is LOU's confirmed starting quarterback. Not listed on the Sept. 24 injury report; game-week reporting describes him as Louisville's active starter, having completed nearly 66% of passes for 816 yards, 6 TDs, 0 INTs, and 4 rushing TDs through three games entering the Wake Forest game. 2026 line: 816 passing yards, 65.8% completions, 11.18 yards per attempt, 6-0 TD-INT over 3 games.
TRENCHES
LOU: 229 rushing yards per game to WAKE's 135
94 YPGLOU is running for 229 a game through three games, well above last season's 163.9, while WAKE is at 135, below its 156.2. If LOU's ground game carries over, it controls the clock and keeps WAKE's offense on the sideline. Three games can inflate a rushing average fast, so expect LOU to settle somewhat lower, but the home side has the clearer run identity here.
PACE & SCRIPT
LOU: 46 points per game to WAKE's 32
14 PPGLouisville is scoring 46 a game over three games, up from 29.9 last season, which likely reflects an easy early schedule. Wake is at 32, up from 28.1. Both numbers probably come down against conference opponents. Treat a high total built on early scoring averages with caution.
TURNOVERS
LOU: 2 takeaways per game to WAKE's 0.33
1.67 TOLouisville is forcing 2 takeaways a game over 3 games, while Wake Forest's defense has just 0.33. Turnovers bounce around a lot, so both numbers should drift toward normal. Louisville's defense has created more short fields so far, which helps a home favorite, but three games of turnover luck is not something to lean on hard.
MISMATCH
LOU: 229 rush yards a game to WAKE's 135
229 VS 135Louisville is running for 229 yards a game, up from 163.9 last season, and Wake Forest is at 135, down from 156.2. The two were close last season, so the gap is mostly Louisville's three-game surge. That kind of jump usually settles some. At home, Louisville can keep leaning on the run, and Wake Forest has to hold up at the line to stay in it.

SITUATIONAL
WAKE: 60% fourth-down conversion rate to LOU's 0%
60 PPWake Forest has converted 60% of fourth downs through three games, close to its 54.5% last season. Louisville is 0% this season after hitting 64.3% a year ago, and over three games that is likely only a handful of tries. Louisville's number should bounce back. Fourth-down rates on tiny attempt counts say little about this game, so weigh coaching aggressiveness more than the percentage.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKCARLOS HERNANDEZRECEIVING YARDS OVER 75.5
I took Wake Forest and the points because I think Louisville's defense is weaker than its record shows. This prop lets me bet on that directly through the one receiver Gio Lopez keeps looking for.
Carlos Hernandez has 19 catches for 302 yards and two touchdowns through three games, about 100 yards a game. The volume is concentrated. Lopez has 63 completions and 843 passing yards, and Hernandez accounts for roughly 30 percent of those catches and more than a third of the yardage. Kam Shanks (111) and Antonio Meeks (134) are well behind him. At almost 16 yards per catch, he needs about five receptions to get past 75.5, and he has averaged more than six.
The matchup helps. Louisville is 74th in success rate allowed and 85th in points added allowed. It has three sacks in three games and gave up 41 to Ole Miss and 31 to SMU. Without much pass rush, Lopez should have time to go through his reads, and on third-and-long he has leaned on Hernandez. Wake converts passing downs at 41.2 percent, 14th nationally. The game script also works for this bet. As a 12.5-point road underdog, Wake is likely to spend a lot of the afternoon throwing to keep up, and more throws mean more targets for its top receiver.
There are real risks. Wake's protection fell apart against Miami. Louisville has six takeaways already, and an early interception or a stalled drive would cut into Lopez's attempts. Three games is a small sample, and one big day could be inflating his average. Even so, when a receiver is this central to a passing game facing a secondary that has been giving up yards, I'll take the over at 75.5 for -115.
