The read
Noon kickoff at Kroger Field and a first-ever meeting. Kentucky comes home a week after stunning Texas A&M in College Station. South Alabama makes its only Power Four trip of the season with its quarterback question still open at kickoff.
Kentucky is the better football team, and I have no argument with that. SP+ has the Wildcats at 6.5 against South Alabama's -12.1, and FPI ranks them 36th to 99th. Add home field, and 20.5 lands right around what SP+ would ask for and above what FPI would ask for. When a number is priced that tight, I want the side whose style shrinks the game. That side is South Alabama.
The Jaguars run the ball, and they do it on purpose. They average 229.7 rushing yards a game, and Keenan Phillips and PJ Martin carry the load behind a line with a 13.0% stuff rate. They also haven't thrown an interception all season. Long drives, few giveaways and fewer total possessions are exactly what a three-score underdog needs. Whether Bishop Davenport starts or Jared Hollins does, this offense has shown it can function. Davenport has 450 yards, 3 touchdowns and no picks over two starts. Hollins went 13 of 20 for 192 with no picks in a first career start and won.
Now look at what Kentucky has to do to cover. The Wildcats are efficient, and Kenny Minchey is averaging 9.2 yards per attempt. Big plays have not been this offense's identity, though: Kentucky ranks 87th in explosiveness and has created only 16 scoring opportunities in three games. The line has a 17.9% stuff rate and gave up sack yardage against SEC fronts. That profile finishes drives well, but it's a tough one for piling up a three-score margin against a team that keeps the ball.
Kentucky has also let games slide late. Against Alabama, the Wildcats were blanked after halftime while Alabama scored 18 and 14 in the final two quarters. Even in the win at Texas A&M, the Aggies took the fourth quarter 14 to 3. Put that together with a first-year staff coming off the biggest win of Will Stein's tenure, and a home date with a Sun Belt team, and I see a Kentucky side that wins this game without much urgency to keep pushing late.
The risk is real, and I'm taking it with eyes open. South Alabama's defense ranks 137th of 138 in explosiveness allowed and 127th in PPA allowed, and that came against a soft schedule. If Minchey hits early chunk plays, this can get away fast. But Kentucky hasn't been built on chunk plays, and South Alabama's front has held up better than that defense's overall numbers suggest. I'll take the points with the team that can keep this game slow.
Injuries noted
South Alabama Jaguars: Bishop Davenport (game-time decision) — QB dealing with a lingering injury from the Tulane game; coach Applewhite said Sept 22 it was 'getting a lot better' and he 'would've been able to play in some capacity' vs. Ohio but was held out as a precaution; status for the Kentucky game unresolved as of Sept 24 reporting.
Kentucky Wildcats: Ty Bryant (probable) — Safety sustained a shoulder injury vs. Texas A&M, aggravated late in the game; per coach Will Stein's Tuesday (Sept 22) comments, Bryant was 'good,' expected to be sore but was not expected to miss time.; Jamarrion Harkless (probable) — Defensive lineman returned to practice Tuesday (Sept 22) and was expected to be available for South Alabama, per Stein.; Grant Grayton (probable) — Defensive back returned to practice Tuesday (Sept 22) and was expected to be available for South Alabama, per Stein.; Henry Boyer (probable) — Tight end returned to practice Tuesday (Sept 22) and was expected to be available for South Alabama, per Stein.

QUARTERBACK
Kenny Minchey is UK's confirmed starter
9.20 Y/AKenny Minchey is UK's confirmed starting quarterback. Notre Dame transfer Minchey is Kentucky's established starter in Will Stein's first season; completed 14-of-18 for 252 yards and 2 TDs in the win at Texas A&M, and reporting dated Sept 24-25 frames him as the incumbent starter heading into the South Alabama game. 2026 line: 699 passing yards, 65.8% completions, 9.20 yards per attempt, 7-1 TD-INT over 3 games.
TRENCHES
USA: 229.7 rushing yards per game to UK's 141.3
88.3 YPGUSA runs for 229.7 a game over three games, close to last season's 199.7, so the ground game is its identity. UK at 141.3 matches last year's 139.2 almost exactly. With both teams near form, this gap looks real, and USA's path on the road is to keep the ball on the ground and shorten the game.
PACE & SCRIPT
USA: 36:46 time of possession per game to UK's 29:04
7:42 TOPSouth Alabama is holding the ball 36:46 a game through three games, up from 31:09 last season. Kentucky is at 29:04, close to its 30:38 from a year ago. South Alabama's jump is the one likely to shrink against an SEC defense on the road. If the Jaguars can still grind out long drives, it keeps Kentucky's possessions down and helps them stay within a number.
TURNOVERS
USA: 0 turnovers committed per game to UK's 1
1 TOUSA is at 0 turnovers committed per game over 3 games; UK is at 1 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 25. Last season USA was at 1 over 12 games and UK at 1.83 over 12 games.
MISMATCH
USA: 53.2% on third down to UK's 22.6%
53.2 VS 22.6South Alabama's offense has converted 53.2% of its third downs over 3 games, up from 42.6% last season. Kentucky is at 22.6%, well below the 40.3% it posted a year ago. Third-down rates swing a lot in three games, and Kentucky's is far enough off last season to expect a rebound. Staying on the field matters most for Kentucky at home, since short drives would give South Alabama more chances to sustain its own.
SITUATIONAL
USA: 53.2% third-down conversion rate to UK's 22.6%
30.6 PPUSA is converting 53.2% of third downs over three games, up from 42.6% last season, while UK has dropped to 22.6% from 40.3%. Both are likely to move back toward last year's marks. UK's slump is the bigger outlier, so the gap should narrow, though if UK keeps stalling at home, USA gets the longer possessions.

1- GARY'S PICKKENNY MINCHEYPASSING YARDS UNDER 245.5
Kenny Minchey has been efficient, but the volume behind that efficiency is modest, and this number asks for more than he's usually given. Through three games he has 699 passing yards on 76 attempts. That is about 233 yards a game on roughly 25 throws. His 9.2 yards per attempt is what makes this line look reachable, but Kentucky is not an offense that throws its way through a game. It ranks 87th in explosiveness, so those yards come from completing passes on schedule, not from launching shots.
This game script also works against him. South Alabama runs for about 230 yards a game and has not thrown an interception all season. It will drain the clock and cut the number of possessions, which is the same reason I took the Jaguars and the points. Fewer Kentucky drives mean fewer dropbacks. If Kentucky does build a lead, it has two backs in CJ Baxter and Jason Patterson it can lean on against a Sun Belt front. Minchey could be watching from the sideline in the fourth quarter well before he reaches 246. His line has also allowed sacks against SEC fronts, and every sack takes yards off a total like this one.
The risk is obvious. South Alabama's pass defense ranks 137th in explosiveness allowed, and two or three long completions early could put this over by halftime. I'm betting that Kentucky's usual approach holds up and it does not suddenly turn into a deep-passing team. It needs about 25 attempts at his current rate just to reach the low 230s, and a shortened game makes that even harder. Under 245.5.
