The read

Ross-Ade Stadium on a sunny September afternoon, highs in the low-to-mid 70s with a light wind. The No. 3 team in the country makes its first road trip of the season to face an in-state program that is still searching for a defense.

Notre Dame is the far better football team, and nothing here argues otherwise. SP+ has the Irish at 26.7, third nationally, and Purdue at -2.1, 75th. That gap lands right around this spread on a neutral field, and this game is in West Lafayette. The favorite costs -118 and the underdog costs -104, so both the number and the price lean toward the Boilermakers.

Purdue can move the football. The offense ranks 22nd nationally in EPA per play at 0.332, with a 49.3% success rate, and it holds up on passing downs at 35.1%. Ryan Browne leads the Big Ten in passing and threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns at UCLA. Xavier Townsend had 162 receiving yards in that game and Asaad Waseem had 149. Purdue has scored 44, 36 and 38 this season.

That passing game lines up against the thinnest part of this Notre Dame roster. Brauntae Johnson has been out since the opener. Luke Talich took that job and played well, but he injured his wrist against Michigan State and is out today. True freshman Joey O'Brien makes his first career start at safety. Notre Dame already ranks 88th in explosiveness allowed, and Purdue's route to the number runs straight at that inexperience.

The Irish offense is efficient and patient, and it ranks 113th in explosiveness. Against its two Big Ten opponents, both at home, Notre Dame won by 28 and 17, and both games were one score at halftime. An offense that builds leads on long drives needs time to reach four touchdowns, and today it has to do it on the road for the first time.

The danger for Purdue is real. The Boilermakers rank 135th in EPA allowed per play, and Kevin Kane counted 18 missed tackles against UCLA. Notre Dame leads the country in points allowed per scoring opportunity and is +8 in turnover margin. Only 3 of those 8 takeaways were interceptions, though, and I don't trust the rest to show up every week. If Browne protects the ball, Purdue has enough in the passing game to keep this inside the number. I'll take the points at the cheaper price.

Injuries noted

Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Luke Talich (out) — Starting field safety will miss the Purdue game with a wrist injury sustained vs. Michigan State; Freeman said he is expected back the following week. True freshman Joey O'Brien starts in his place.; Brauntae Johnson (out) — Safety has been sidelined since the Wisconsin season opener; his absence is why Talich had been starting, per the Sept. 22 depth-chart report.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • CJ Carr is ND's confirmed starter

    9.95 Y/A

CJ Carr is ND's confirmed starting quarterback. Sept. 22, 2026 depth-chart report lists Carr unchanged as QB1 for the Purdue game (3-0, 726 yards, 6 TD, 0 INT, 72.6% completion), a status reaffirmed in the Sept. 25 SI preview and CBS Sports gametracker. 2026 line: 726 passing yards, 72.6% completions, 9.95 yards per attempt, 6-0 TD-INT over 3 games.

  • Ryan Browne is PUR's confirmed starter

    10.28 Y/A

Ryan Browne is PUR's confirmed starting quarterback. Preview reports Browne as Purdue's active starting QB, leading the Big Ten in passing (341.3 ypg, 7 TD, 1 INT, 73.3% completion) entering the Notre Dame game. 2026 line: 977 passing yards, 72.6% completions, 10.28 yards per attempt, 6-1 TD-INT over 3 games.

TRENCHES

  • ND: 58.3 rushing yards allowed per game to PUR's 205

    146.7 YPG

Notre Dame allows 58.3 rushing yards a game through 3 games; Purdue allows 205. Notre Dame's front has shut the run down so far, while Purdue's run defense has been soft. Three games is a small sample, but both numbers point toward Notre Dame controlling the line of scrimmage on the ground.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • ND: 7.7 points allowed per game to PUR's 36.3

    28.7 PPG

ND is allowing 7.7 points a game through three games, down from 17.6 last season, while PUR is giving up 36.3, worse than last year's 31.8. ND's defense has been elite, though three games leaves room for easy opponents in that number. PUR's leaky defense lines up with last season's trend, so ND's offense should find room even as its own defense regresses somewhat.

TURNOVERS

  • ND: 2.67 takeaways per game to PUR's 0.33

    2.33 TO

Notre Dame has forced 2.67 takeaways a game over 3 games, while Purdue's defense has 0.33. Turnover rates are the least stable number in a box score, and both should drift toward average. Notre Dame's defense has been generating extra chances, which adds to the edge elsewhere, but it's not something to count on repeating game after game.

MISMATCH

  • ND: 7.7 points allowed a game to PUR's 36.3

    7.7 VS 36.3

Notre Dame has allowed 7.7 points a game over 3 games, well under the 17.6 it gave up last season. Purdue has allowed 36.3, worse than its 31.8 a year ago. Three games is a small window and Notre Dame's mark is likely to rise, but Purdue giving up points is consistent with last season. The gap points to Notre Dame's offense finding room on the road, and Purdue needing long drives to keep a weak defense off the field.

COVERAGE

  • ND: 30.6% third downs allowed to PUR's 55.6%

    25 PP

Notre Dame's defense has let opponents convert 30.6% of third downs over 3 games, and Purdue has allowed 55.6%. Purdue letting opponents move the chains on more than half of third downs means drives keep going. Third-down rates move a lot over three games, but in this matchup Notre Dame should keep possessions going better than Purdue can.

  • ND: 134.7 passing yards allowed per game to PUR's 225

    90.3 YPG

ND is at 134.7 passing yards allowed per game over 3 games; PUR is at 225 over 3 games. Those are what each defense has allowed in this season's games through Sep 25.

REPLACEMENT

  • Brauntae Johnson (S) is out for ND

    OUT

Safety has been sidelined since the Wisconsin season opener; his absence is why Talich had been starting, per the Sept. 22 depth-chart report. Notre Dame Changes Depth Chart at RB, Safety Injury Announced for Purdue Week (2026-09-22)

  • Luke Talich (S) is out for ND

    OUT

Starting field safety will miss the Purdue game with a wrist injury sustained vs. Michigan State; Freeman said he is expected back the following week. True freshman Joey O'Brien starts in his place. Notre Dame safety Luke Talich out against Purdue with wrist injury (2026-09-25)

SITUATIONAL

  • ND: 30.3 penalty yards per game to PUR's 60

    29.7 YDS

ND is at 30.3 penalty yards per game over 3 games; PUR is at 60 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 25. Last season ND was at 56.5 over 12 games and PUR at 51.1 over 12 games.

    -114 · LOST · ACTUAL 111

    Purdue

This number assumes Notre Dame cuts Ryan Browne's production by a third, and I don't think the Irish are equipped to do that today.

Browne has thrown for 977 yards through three games, about 325 a game, on 10.3 yards per attempt. He leads the Big Ten in passing, and his last outing was 378 yards and three touchdowns on the road at UCLA. He also spreads the ball around. Asaad Waseem and Xavier Townsend both went over 140 yards in that game, so a defense can't take away one receiver and call it done.

Notre Dame is a much better defense than anything Purdue has seen, and that is why the line sits at 217.5 and not near his average. But the Irish are thin in exactly the wrong place. Brauntae Johnson has been out since the opener, Luke Talich is out with a wrist injury, and true freshman Joey O'Brien is making his first career start at safety. The Irish already rank 88th in explosiveness allowed. A quarterback who averages double-digit yards per attempt will go after a freshman safety on his first start.

Game script helps too. Notre Dame is a big favorite, so Purdue should be throwing for most of the second half. Even if Browne's efficiency drops to around 7 yards per attempt against a better defense, 32 to 35 throws gets him past this number. The Irish offense also moves slowly and ranks 113th in explosiveness, so Purdue should not fall so far behind early that the game ends before Browne gets his volume.

The risk is turnovers. Notre Dame is +8 in turnover margin, and a pick or two could end drives early. Only three of those eight takeaways were interceptions, though, and Browne has thrown one all season. Notre Dame's red-zone defense is excellent, but that limits points, not yards between the 20s. The number is too low for a quarterback averaging 325 a game against a secondary starting a freshman at safety. I'll take the over at -114.
