The read
Noon kickoff at Ohio Stadium, the Illibuck on the table, and Ohio State opening Big Ten play two weeks after Texas scored 21 fourth quarter points to beat it in Austin. Illinois arrives for its first road game of the season with a transfer quarterback and a defense still learning Bobby Hauck's 3-3-5.
Ohio State is the better team by a wide margin. It rates first in the country on SP+ at 29.7, with the top defense in that system. Jeremiah Smith has 400 yards on 21 catches, and he faces a secondary that misses tackles. Illinois ranks 84th in explosiveness allowed and 88th in predicted points added allowed per play. If the Buckeyes run away with this, that is the route.
The number is the problem. Illinois sits at 11.1 on SP+ and 44th on FPI. On both systems the gap between these teams comes in short of 27.5 before the building enters the conversation. I am being asked to lay more than the opponent-adjusted ratings support, against an offense that stays on schedule.
Illinois moves the ball efficiently: - It ranks 7th in success rate at 54.3% and 22nd on passing downs at 39.5%. - Its line has been stuffed on just 11.9% of runs. - Katin Houser is completing 74% with 8 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. - Collin Dixon has already been in the end zone 7 times. - The Illini have scored at least 27 in every game.
The schedule behind those numbers ranks 103rd, and this is the best defense Illinois will see. I discount the numbers accordingly and still count them.
Ohio State's offense brings real friction into this game: - Friday's report listed two offensive linemen out and two more doubtful. - Tight end Bennett Christian is out. - The right side was already reshuffled after Phillip Daniels was hurt at Texas. - The Buckeyes have been stuffed on 18.2% of runs and rank 81st in passing down success at 30.8%. - Ryan Day spent the week saying third down and red zone execution need fixing.
Illinois' front holds at the point of attack with a 23.2% stuff rate. Its trouble comes after first contact.
Covering this number means scoring for four quarters. Ohio State did that against Kent State and Ball State. Against the one quality opponent on its schedule, it led 20-3 at half and scored 3 points after the break. A first-year coordinator running a run-heavy offense, a patched line and a depth chart that reaches Luke Fahey late all lean toward a game where Ohio State wins comfortably and Illinois still has time to find the back door. I expect Ohio State to win. I need Illinois inside 27.5, and I trust this offense to get there.

QUARTERBACK
Katin Houser is ILL's confirmed starter
9.36 Y/AKatin Houser is ILL's confirmed starting quarterback. Sept 21-23, 2026 reports (Eleven Warriors, SI) discuss Houser as Illinois's established starting QB for the Ohio State game, citing his 2026 season stats (758 yards, 8 TD, 2 INT through three games) and his history facing Ohio State in 2023 with Michigan State. 2026 line: 758 passing yards, 74.1% completions, 9.36 yards per attempt, 8-2 TD-INT over 3 games.
Julian Sayin is OSU's confirmed starter
10.62 Y/AJulian Sayin is OSU's confirmed starting quarterback. Sept 21, 2026 Yahoo Sports report states 'Ohio State's Julian Sayin will lead the Buckeyes' offense' for the Illinois game, referencing his prior performance vs Illinois last season. 2026 line: 839 passing yards, 70.9% completions, 10.62 yards per attempt, 6-1 TD-INT over 3 games.
TRENCHES
OSU: 83 rushing yards allowed per game to ILL's 131
48 YPGOhio State allows 83 rushing yards a game and Illinois allows 131, both over three games. The Buckeyes' number fits a defense that makes teams abandon the run, since trailing offenses throw more and run less, though the sheet does not show game scripts. At home, Ohio State's front looks likely to hold Illinois to a pass-heavy plan, and Illinois' softer run defense is the one on the spot.
PACE & SCRIPT
OSU: 10 points allowed per game to ILL's 21.3
11.3 PPGOhio State is allowing 10 points a game through three games, Illinois is allowing 21.3. This is Ohio State's normal: it allowed 9.3 a game across 14 games last season. Illinois at 21.3 is a touch better than its 23.6 last season. Points against Ohio State have been scarce for two seasons, so an Illinois path to scoring has to come from short fields or big plays.
TURNOVERS
OSU: 2 takeaways per game to ILL's 0.67
1.33 TOILL is at 0.67 takeaways per game over 3 games; OSU is at 2 over 3 games. Those are what each defense has allowed in this season's games through Sep 25.
MISMATCH
OSU: 364.7 pass yards a game to ILL's 252.7
364.7 VS 252.7Ohio State is throwing for 364.7 yards a game over 3 games, up from 268.2 last season. Illinois sits at 252.7, close to its 235.8 from a year ago. The Illinois number looks like who it is, while Ohio State's jump off a three-game sample has more room to settle. Both offenses throw, so at home Ohio State can push the ball downfield, and Illinois has to keep pace through the air rather than hide in a slow game.
COVERAGE
OSU: 126.3 passing yards allowed per game to ILL's 217.7
91.3 YPGOhio State has held opponents to 126.3 passing yards a game through 3 games, and Illinois has allowed 217.7. Three games can't show whether the Buckeyes faced pass-first offenses or teams that ran because they were behind, so that number may climb against a real passing attack. Illinois's pass defense has been the easier one to throw on, which is worth weighing for Ohio State's passing props and the total.
REPLACEMENT
Bennett Christian (TE) is out for OSU

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKKATIN HOUSERPASSING YARDS OVER 181.5
I took Illinois +27.5 because I trust this offense to keep scoring for four quarters. Katin Houser's yardage is the prop that fits that read, and the number is set low enough to allow for the step up in opponent.
Through three games Houser has 758 yards on 81 attempts, completing 60 of them. That is 74% and more than nine yards per throw. He has 8 touchdowns against 2 interceptions. He clears 181.5 without matching those numbers. He can lose a third of his production to the best defense he will face all year and still get there.
The game script helps from every direction: - If Ohio State plays the way the spread suggests and builds a lead, Illinois throws. A team chasing three or four scores puts the ball in Houser's hands in the second half, and Ohio State's patched offensive line and first-year coordinator do not project to shorten the game by grinding clock. - If the game stays tighter, which is my read, Illinois stays on schedule. This offense ranks 7th in success rate and 22nd on passing downs. It does not need a clean pocket every snap to move the chains.
The risk is plain. Ohio State has the top defense in the country on SP+, and Illinois' 103rd-ranked schedule has flattered every number I just cited. A couple of sacks, a short field and an early hook would all hurt this bet. I have discounted Houser heavily for all of that, and the discounted version still lands around this line with extra volume on top.
Collin Dixon to score at +141 was the other ticket I considered, but the Buckeyes will build their coverage around him. Yardage gives Houser more ways to cash than a single red zone target does. Houser over 181.5 passing yards.
