The read
Paulson Stadium welcomes its first Power Four visitor, with Willie Fritz returning to Statesboro and Georgia Southern getting a ranked opponent on its own field.
I’m backing Houston’s ability to keep producing scoring opportunities. Conner Weigman’s effectiveness has carried beyond the Southern blowout. He threw for 305 yards against Oregon State and 282 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions against Texas Tech. With Makhi Hughes and Re’Shaun Sanford II supporting the passing game, Houston has multiple ways to sustain possessions.
Georgia Southern’s defensive disruption is the strongest obstacle. Its 32.2% defensive stuff rate makes Houston’s opening rushing plan a genuine contest. Houston, however, has had only 10.0% of its carries stopped at or behind the line and owns a 57.4% offensive success rate. I expect that combination of productive blocking and quarterback execution to give the Cougars enough answers when the Eagles win individual downs.
Opponent adjustment also tempers my confidence in Georgia Southern’s defensive numbers. Its ninth-ranked raw defensive success rate sits alongside an SP+ defensive ranking of 100th. Houston’s offense ranks 25th in SP+. That comparison supports expecting Houston to sustain more offense than Georgia Southern’s early defensive results might suggest.
The other possession matters just as much when laying this spread. Max Johnson has averaged 5.98 yards per attempt, and Georgia Southern has produced 3.000 points per scoring opportunity. Houston has allowed 2.0932 line yards and stuffed 24.3% of opposing carries. My expectation is that the Eagles will struggle to establish enough rushing support to turn their passing completions into repeated scoring drives.
Houston’s tackling lapses and vulnerability to damaging plays give Georgia Southern a route to stay within the number. I put more weight on the Cougars’ offensive consistency and the Eagles’ difficulty finishing possessions. Sustained scoring pressure against an offense that has struggled to answer is the reason I’m laying 17.5.
The research

QUARTERBACK
Conner Weigman is HOU's projected starter
8.84 Y/AConner Weigman is HOU's projected starting quarterback. A September 22 game preview frames Houston as entering the matchup behind Weigman, while Georgia Southern's official preview identifies him as Houston's quarterback; neither source explicitly announces the game-day starter. 2026 line: 707 passing yards, 70.0% completions, 8.84 yards per attempt, 7-1 TD-INT over 3 games.
Max Johnson is GASO's projected starter
5.98 Y/AMax Johnson is GASO's projected starting quarterback. Current-week official and attributed previews identify Johnson as Georgia Southern's quarterback and describe him leading the offense, but neither explicitly confirms the game-day starter. 2026 line: 712 passing yards, 65.5% completions, 5.98 yards per attempt, 2-1 TD-INT over 3 games.
PACE & SCRIPT
HOU: 45.3 points per game to GASO's 21.7
23.7 PPGHOU is at 45.3 points per game over 3 games; GASO is at 21.7 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 25. Last season HOU was at 29.1 over 13 games and GASO at 27.9 over 13 games.
MISMATCH
HOU: 264 rush yards a game to GASO's 115.7
264 VS 115.7Houston is running for 264 yards a game through three games, up from 178.1 last season, while Georgia Southern sits at 115.7, down from 154.9. That leaves Georgia Southern needing long drives it has not been putting together, while Houston can lean on the ground and shorten the game. Three games is a small window, so expect Houston's number to drift back toward last season. In this spot, the side that controls the clock usually controls the script.
COVERAGE
GASO: 142 passing yards allowed per game to HOU's 253.3
111.3 YPGHOU is at 253.3 passing yards allowed per game over 3 games; GASO is at 142 over 3 games. Those are what each defense has allowed in this season's games through Sep 25.
SITUATIONAL
HOU: 100% fourth-down conversion rate to GASO's 25%
75 PPHouston has converted every fourth down it has tried in three games, and Georgia Southern is at 25%. Those come from only a few attempts. Last season the two teams were close, 59.4% and 56.3%. This gap will shrink, so don't treat the fourth-down edge as a real advantage in this game.
HOU: 66.7% third-down conversion rate to GASO's 41.9%
24.8 PPHOU is at 66.7% third-down conversion rate over 3 games; GASO is at 41.9% over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 25. Last season HOU was at 40.3% over 13 games and GASO at 44.7% over 13 games.
HOU: 28.3 first downs per game to GASO's 19.3
9 FDHOU is at 28.3 first downs per game over 3 games; GASO is at 19.3 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 25. Last season HOU was at 21.9 over 13 games and GASO at 22.1 over 13 games.

1- GARY'S PICKCONNER WEIGMANPASSING YARDS OVER 237.5
I’m backing Weigman to clear this number against a Georgia Southern defense whose strong raw results are undercut by its 100th-ranked SP+ defense. He has thrown for 305 yards against Oregon State and 282 against Texas Tech, showing he can comfortably beat 237.5 when Houston faces meaningful resistance.
Georgia Southern’s ability to disrupt the run could also keep Houston leaning on Weigman rather than simply grinding out the game with Makhi Hughes. The risk is a comfortable Houston lead reducing his fourth-quarter volume, but I expect his efficiency and multiple receiving options to get him over the number before that becomes decisive.
