The read
It's noon Eastern under the Alamodome roof. Colorado State walks into its first road game of the season with its starting quarterback doubtful and a backup whose vision, in Jim Mora's words, is "not entirely restored."
The quarterback news is serious. Hauss Hejny has carried this offense: 619 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception. He left the BYU game in the first quarter. K'saan Farrar then went 13-of-23 for 70 yards against the Cougar starters, and the Rams didn't score in the second or third quarters. Whether Farrar or Darius Curry starts today, it is a real downgrade. It comes against a UTSA defense that ranks 1st of 138 at limiting explosive plays, and explosive plays are how Colorado State, 7th in explosiveness, has been scoring.
So why take the points? Because 13.5 asks UTSA to win by more than two touchdowns, and this offense hasn't won by that much against anyone except UT Rio Grande Valley. The Roadrunners rank 135th in explosiveness, 115th in points per scoring opportunity and 118th on passing downs. They convert 20% of their third downs and commit more penalties than any team in the country, 11.3 per game for 115 yards. Owen McCown threw for 214 yards on 42 attempts at Texas State and 70 yards at Texas. Jeff Traylor says his team is two to four weeks from where he expected it to be. On the road UTSA has averaged 18.5 points. An offense that moves the ball but stalls near the goal line is a hard one to lay two scores with.
The opponent-adjusted ratings agree. SP+ has UTSA 74th and Colorado State 96th, and FPI has them 76th and 96th. That's a gap of about five points on a neutral field, and those ratings include a Rams offense that ranked 43rd in points added per play. Home field and the quarterback change have to make up the rest of the 13.5, and I think that asks too much of them.
Colorado State also has strengths that don't depend on Hejny. Mel Brown averages 9.8 yards a carry and the team runs for 177.3 yards a game, so a backup quarterback can hand the ball off and keep the clock running. UTSA has 2 sacks in three games, so whoever starts for the Rams shouldn't be under constant pressure. UTSA center Ben Rios called his line's pass protection "definitely not to the standard" after Texas. Meanwhile the Colorado State defense has 5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss and 7 interceptions, three of them from CJ Blocker. Takeaways are how a big underdog stays close.
The risk is clear. Colorado State's defense ranks 120th in success rate allowed, and UTSA stays on schedule, 16th on standard downs. If the Roadrunners finally finish their drives, this game gets away. I'd still rather bet with what UTSA's offense has shown all season than against it, and I'm getting plus money to do it.
Injuries noted
Colorado State Rams: Hauss Hejny (doubtful) — Right hamstring injury suffered vs. BYU (Week 3); coach Jim Mora said Sept 21 it would be 'touch and go' for the UTSA game, and Sept 25 reporting indicated he is unlikely to play.; K'saan Farrar (questionable) — Backup QB was poked in the eye vs. BYU; cleared medically per Sept 21/25 reporting but coach Mora noted his vision is 'not entirely restored,' and he was benched in favor of Darius Curry during the BYU game.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
QUARTERBACK
Owen McCown is UTSA's confirmed starter
6.08 Y/AOwen McCown is UTSA's confirmed starting quarterback. McCown is UTSA's established starter in his third year at the position; the Sept. 26 Yahoo Sports week preview reports he had 30 TDs to 7 INTs last season and no injury concerns are noted for this game. 2026 line: 559 passing yards, 69.6% completions, 6.08 yards per attempt, 4-1 TD-INT over 3 games.
PACE & SCRIPT
CSU: 38.7 points per game to UTSA's 27.3
11.3 PPGCSU is at 38.7 points per game over 3 games; UTSA is at 27.3 over 3 games. Those are this season's games through Sep 25. Last season CSU was at 18.5 over 12 games and UTSA at 35.5 over 13 games.
TURNOVERS
CSU: 3.33 takeaways per game to UTSA's 1.33
2 TOColorado State has forced 3.33 takeaways a game over 3 games, while UTSA's defense sits at 1.33. Turnover rates swing wildly week to week, and three games isn't enough to call a defense opportunistic by nature. Expect that number to cool, and don't build too much of a view on this game around Colorado State winning the turnover battle again.
MISMATCH
CSU: 50% on third down to UTSA's 20%
50 VS 20Colorado State is converting half its third downs through three games after 32.9% last season, and UTSA is at 20% after 39.7%. Both numbers are three-game samples and both sit far from last season, so expect each to move back toward the middle. For now, Colorado State extends drives and UTSA stalls. That gap matters most for how many real scoring chances each side gets.
SITUATIONAL
CSU: 50% third-down conversion rate to UTSA's 20%
30 PPThrough three games CSU has moved the chains on half its third downs while UTSA has converted one in five. Both numbers are far from last season, when CSU sat at 32.9% over 12 games and UTSA at 39.7%, so each is likely to drift back toward the middle. For this game, CSU extending drives and UTSA going three-and-out would tilt possession and field position toward the visitors, but three games is a thin base for trusting either rate.
CSU: 27 penalty yards per game to UTSA's 115
88 YDSUTSA is giving away 115 yards a game in flags, CSU just 27, both over three games. Last season UTSA was at 68.7 and CSU at 56.3, so both are running at extremes that usually settle. If UTSA keeps handing out free first downs at home, CSU gets extra chances to sustain drives, but penalty totals swing hard with officiating crews and a three-game sample.
CSU: 281.3 team passing yards per game to UTSA's 201
80.3 YPGColorado State is throwing for 281.3 a game through three games, up from 215.9 last season. UTSA is at 201, down from 247.6. Both have moved about the same distance in opposite directions, which points to early schedule more than a new identity. On the road, CSU's passing will get a fairer test, so expect its number to settle closer to last season's.

1- GARY'S PICK
MEL BROWNANYTIME TOUCHDOWN OVER 0.5If Colorado State scores today, I expect Mel Brown to be the one carrying it in. With Hauss Hejny doubtful, the passing game that produced 10 touchdowns through the air in three games is effectively gone. K'saan Farrar went 13-of-23 for 70 yards against BYU, and whether he or Darius Curry starts, Jim Mora isn't going to ask either of them to win this game with his arm. The plan is to hand the ball off, and Brown gets it more than anyone else in that backfield. He's averaging 9.8 yards a carry for a team running for 177.3 a game.
That changes how the Rams' receivers should be priced. Jackson Harper at +145 has two touchdown catches, but both came from a quarterback who won't be on the field. Brown is the Colorado State scorer whose chances actually get better with a backup under center. Inside the 10, a backup quarterback's offense turns into a running offense, and Brown should get most of those carries.
The matchup has one real problem. UTSA ranks 1st in the country at limiting explosive plays, so I don't expect the long runs that built Brown's average. He probably won't score from 50 yards out. The Rams can still get close through other means. UTSA commits 11.3 penalties a game for 115 yards, and the Colorado State defense has already forced 7 interceptions. Short fields will come from those, and short fields finish with a handoff.
The number +135 implies about 42.6%. The lead back on a run-first offense, with its best passer sidelined, should find the end zone at least that often against a UTSA defense that has given up enough to be a 13.5-point favorite, not a runaway one. This lines up with my Rams pick: I'm betting Colorado State stays close by running the ball, and Brown's touchdown is how that shows up on the scoreboard.
