The read
Wagner heads to Berkeley after an 87–3 loss at James Madison. Cal returns from a conference win at Syracuse with a new coaching staff still working to establish consistent execution.
I’m taking Wagner because Cal’s offensive shortcomings give the underdog a credible path to this number. Through two games, the Bears have a 34.2% offensive success rate and have averaged 3.455 points per scoring opportunity—drives reaching the opponent’s 40. Jordan Somerville’s emphasis on fundamentals and capitalizing on opportunities fits that production. My judgment is that stalled possessions remain a meaningful obstacle to Cal building the separation this ticket requires.
Wagner has recorded five sacks and 16 tackles for loss across three games. That does not establish that its defense can control Cal, but it gives the Seahawks a way to interrupt drives. Tosh Lupoi specifically identified that disruption as a preparation concern. With these points, occasional stops and field-goal possessions can matter without Wagner having to match Cal’s offense.
The biggest danger is Cal’s defense accelerating the scoring. Michael Hutchings used a more aggressive approach against Syracuse, and Kingston Lopa has four interceptions through two games. Benjamin Newman managed only 101 passing yards at James Madison, so repeated empty Wagner possessions are a real concern. His interception-free start offers some encouragement, but it does not erase that risk.
Cal also has productive options in Adam Mohammed, Ian Strong and Chase Hendricks. I expect them to challenge Wagner, and the James Madison result makes another collapse impossible to dismiss. Still, I put more weight on Cal’s demonstrated difficulty sustaining and finishing drives than on assuming it reproduces another opponent’s offensive performance. Wagner +58.5 is my bet; it does not depend on an upset, an early substitution plan or Cal overlooking the game.

Wagner Seahawks: Jack Stevens (out) — Wagner's original starting quarterback sustained a neck injury in the opener, missed the next two games, and was reported as not returning until after the bye that follows the Cal game.; Matt Morad (questionable) — Running back did not play against James Madison and remained questionable for Cal, although one preview reported there was a good chance he would play.; Sekou Kamau (questionable) — Running back played very little against James Madison and was described as questionable for Cal by Wagner play-by-play voice Marc Ernay.
California Golden Bears: Carter Vargas (questionable) — Running back missed the Syracuse game and remained questionable for Wagner.; Dorian Thomas (questionable) — The current game preview raised a readiness question after the tight end played only two snaps against Syracuse; Cal issued no formal designation.; Ricky Fletcher (questionable) — The current game preview raised a readiness question after the cornerback played only 15 defensive snaps against Syracuse; Cal issued no formal designation.; Jimothy Lewis Jr. (questionable) — The current game preview raised a readiness question after the offensive tackle played only 18 offensive snaps against Syracuse; Cal issued no formal designation.
