The read

Arizona returns to Tucson after letting a halftime lead slip away at BYU. Northern Illinois arrives seeking its first win, with Taron Dickens getting the start at quarterback.

I’m taking the points because NIU’s defensive resistance presents a meaningful obstacle to Arizona turning control into sustained separation. Through two games, the Huskies have allowed 2.733 points per scoring opportunity—drives reaching their opponent’s 40-yard line. Arizona has generated successful plays consistently, but its offensive explosiveness ranks 134th and its scoring opportunities have produced 4.000 points apiece. My read is that NIU can make enough possessions end without touchdowns to stay inside this spread.

Arizona also has to redistribute the receiving work of Giovanni Richardson, who is out after catching 13 passes for 144 yards. Those contributions are included in its opening results; this offense still has to demonstrate how effectively it functions without him. Noah Fifita remains productive, and Tre Spivey, Brandon Phelps and Cole Rusk offer alternatives, but replacing Richardson’s production is a real assignment.

Dickens gives NIU a credible route to sustaining some possessions. He completed 22 of 27 passes for 193 yards against Illinois State, with DeAree Rogers catching 11 passes for 74 yards. I expect that connection to give the Huskies a better chance of moving the chains than their opening shutout suggests. Dickens already played substantially, though, so his promotion is no automatic offensive reset.

The danger is Arizona shutting down the run and forcing NIU into passing downs, where the Huskies have a 10.3% success rate. Arizona’s defense has stopped 24.4% of opposing carries at or behind the line. Repeated stalled possessions could overwhelm even useful defensive resistance, and NIU’s defensive touchdown last week makes its offensive improvement less convincing than the final score alone.

That risk keeps my confidence measured. I still prefer NIU +34.5: its defense offers a plausible way to interrupt Arizona’s scoring, while Dickens provides enough passing evidence to support some offensive contribution. I’m backing those matchup mechanisms to keep the Huskies within the number.

    Arizona

I’m taking Fifita under 265.5 passing yards. He has averaged 246 yards through two games, and this matchup gives Arizona a credible path to play from ahead without asking him to carry the offense through the air.

Northern Illinois has shown enough defensive resistance to make sustained, explosive passing production less certain, while Arizona’s offensive explosiveness ranks 134th. The absence of Giovanni Richardson also matters: his 13 catches and 144 yards are embedded in Fifita’s opening numbers, and Arizona now has to redistribute that dependable production among receivers who have delivered much smaller early samples.

The risk is that NIU’s run defense forces Arizona toward the pass, or that Fifita accumulates yards while the Huskies prevent touchdowns. Still, Arizona can lean on its backs if game state becomes comfortable, and 266 yards requires more passing volume or efficiency than Fifita has averaged so far. At -114, I’m backing him to finish below the number.
