The read
New Mexico makes its first road trip of the season to Norman. Oklahoma returns home after losing at Michigan, with its offensive execution under scrutiny.
I’m taking the points because New Mexico has a credible way to interrupt Oklahoma’s scoring. The Lobos have eight sacks through two games, including 2.5 from Brett Karhu, and reporting describes a defense that uses stunts and movement. Against an Oklahoma offense whose rushing stuff rate is 23.1%, I see an opportunity to create difficult passing situations and stall possessions.
Oklahoma’s stated emphasis on establishing the run makes sense, but execution remains the question. John Mateer completed 17 of 33 passes at Michigan. Rocky Beers offers a productive receiving option, but Trell Harris is out following that game, and Oklahoma’s season passing production includes his contributions. My concern with laying this spread is whether the Sooners can consistently turn defensive stops into touchdowns.
New Mexico has something to work with offensively: Scottre Humphrey has 174 rushing yards on 28 carries, and Jason Eck intends to continue the Toa Fa’avae–Luke Moga rotation. I expect Oklahoma to make those possessions harder. Its opponent-adjusted SP+ defense ranks seventh, and its ability to force New Mexico into passing downs is the biggest threat to this ticket.
The Lobos’ early dominance also needs perspective. Their schedule ranks 138th, and eight takeaways have helped their results. I’m not counting on that takeaway production repeating against Oklahoma. Still, the Sooners’ offensive inconsistencies and New Mexico’s demonstrated disruption give me enough reason to back the Lobos to stay within this spread. That supports the points more than an outright upset.
Injuries noted
New Mexico Lobos: Jack Layne (out for season) — The incumbent starter is out for the year following an elbow issue requiring another operation; the current Oklahoma-week depth chart instead lists Fa'avae, Moga and Laubstein.; Massiah Mingo (questionable) — Mingo has a foot injury. Jason Eck said he was optimistic the receiver would be available at Oklahoma, but no definitive clearance was reported.; Tripp Walsh (questionable) — Walsh is dealing with an undisclosed injury. Eck expressed optimism that the tight end could return against Oklahoma, but his availability remained unconfirmed.; Shawn Miller (questionable) — Miller has an undisclosed injury and had not played in the first two games. Eck said he could possibly return in Week 3, leaving his status unresolved.
Oklahoma Sooners: Trell Harris (out) — Brent Venables said the starting wide receiver will be unavailable for the foreseeable future after being injured at Michigan; no return date was given.; Kip Lewis (questionable) — Lewis left the Michigan game with an apparent right-knee injury. Venables initially said he would miss some time, while Oklahoma's subsequent Week 3 depth chart continued to list him at WILL linebacker; his New Mexico-game status was not definitively announced in the opened attributed reports.; Michael Fasusi (questionable) — Fasusi missed the Michigan game after aggravating a shoulder injury. Venables characterized it as short-term, and the Week 3 depth chart lists him in an OR arrangement at left tackle, without a definitive game designation.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKROCKY BEERSRECEIVING YARDS OVER 42.5
I’m backing Beers to clear a modest number after he produced 137 receiving yards across Oklahoma’s first two games. Trell Harris being out should leave more opportunity available, and Beers has already established himself as a productive option for John Mateer.
New Mexico’s pressure packages could disrupt Oklahoma’s offense, but they can also create a need for Mateer to get the ball out rather than wait on longer-developing plays. Beers does not need a huge passing day to reach 43 yards. His early production and the opening created by Harris’ absence make the over worth laying -115.
