The read
Oklahoma State returns to Boone Pickens Stadium after beating Oregon, with its final nonconference game offering another opportunity to develop Eric Morris’s new team. Murray State arrives after earning its first win of the season.
I’m taking Murray State because Oklahoma State’s offensive improvement has yet to establish the possession-to-possession reliability this spread demands. Drew Mestemaker’s 317 passing yards and 109 rushing yards against Oregon demonstrate the danger, especially with Morris deliberately involving his quarterback in the running game. But Mestemaker also threw two interceptions in that victory, and Oklahoma State has committed six turnovers across two games. Empty possessions matter when the favorite needs sustained separation.
The finishing numbers reinforce that concern: Oklahoma State has a 40.0% offensive success rate and averages 2.571 points per scoring opportunity, defined as a drive reaching the opponent’s 40. Those results came against different opposition, so I expect improvement against Murray State. I still don’t see enough evidence to make relentless touchdown production my expectation.
Murray State has a plausible way to contribute to its own cover. Tyrell Campbell has produced 213 rushing yards at 7.1 per carry, and the Racers generated 194 rushing yards against Valparaiso. Morris has specifically highlighted their formations, shifts and trick plays as preparation concerns. My judgment is that their running game and offensive variety can produce enough useful possessions to make this handicap difficult to overcome.
The risk is that Oklahoma State shuts down that ground game and forces Murray State’s unresolved quarterback situation to carry the offense. Its protection against Oregon also gives Mestemaker a credible platform to punish the Racers’ blitzes. I’m not relying on a letdown or an early substitution plan. I’m backing Murray State’s ability to offer some resistance, coupled with Oklahoma State’s demonstrated turnover and finishing problems, at +55.5.
