The read
Noon in Columbus, with Ohio State back home after the loss at Texas and Kent State arriving off its win over Wofford. The Buckeyes have execution to clean up and younger players to evaluate.
My read is that Ohio State can sustain touchdown production through both the passing and running games. Kent State has allowed a 52.3% offensive success rate this season. Through two games, Julian Sayin has averaged 10.49 yards per attempt, with Jeremiah Smith producing 315 receiving yards. Ohio State has also had just 10.7% of its carries stopped at or behind the line. I expect that combination to make it difficult for Kent to force enough stalled possessions.
Kent’s ability to extend its own drives matters just as much. Dru DeShields has contributed 101 rushing yards, and his mobility gives the offense a way to escape trouble. But his passing production against South Carolina was 63 yards on 20 attempts. My concern for Kent is that occasional quarterback runs won’t compensate for difficulty moving the ball through the air against Ohio State. Repeated empty possessions would give the Buckeyes opportunities to keep separating.
The substitution question deserves weight at this spread. Against Ball State, Sayin’s replacement first appeared during the third quarter, and Ohio State still scored 28 second-half points in its 56–3 win. All its touchdowns came on offense. South Carolina’s touchdowns in Kent’s 57–0 loss also came on offense. Those games support a specific part of this bet: substantial separation can continue through offensive execution, without requiring return touchdowns or starters playing throughout.
The real obstacle is Ohio State’s 29.3% success rate on passing downs. Kent has recorded 6 sacks across its two games, so it has shown the ability to disrupt possessions. At this price, those stops matter. I’m backing Ohio State because I expect its running game and productive passing attack to prevent enough of those situations, while its defense keeps Kent from sustaining the drives needed to contain the margin.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKJULIAN SAYINPASSING YARDS UNDER 291.5
The same game script that supports Ohio State laying 51.5 works against Sayin reaching 292 passing yards. He has averaged 299 yards through two games, but this matchup creates a substantial risk that volume disappears before the fourth quarter.
Ohio State can attack Kent State on the ground, and Sayin’s replacement entered during the third quarter of the Buckeyes’ 56–3 win over Ball State. If Kent struggles to extend drives, Ohio State should have little reason to keep its starting quarterback throwing aggressively once the margin is secure.
Sayin is capable of beating this number efficiently, but the under does not require Ohio State’s offense to struggle. I expect the Buckeyes to score comfortably while spreading second-half work among their backs and reserve players, leaving Sayin short of 291.5 passing yards.
