The read
The Valley Trophy is on the line under the lights at CEFCU Stadium. Fresno State’s move to the Pac-12 makes this a nonconference meeting, with the next matchup scheduled for 2029.
I’m backing Fresno because its defensive front gives it a credible way to control this matchup. The Bulldogs have stopped opposing runs at or behind the line at a 27.8% rate. San José State’s offense has benefited from Jabari Bates’ 319 rushing yards; my read is that disrupting that foundation can force Luke Weaver to carry more possessions through the air. Fresno’s one recorded sack across two games prevents me from assuming constant pressure, but its defensive advantages extend beyond sacks: it has allowed 0.022 PPA per play against San José State’s 0.076.
The opponent-adjusted comparison strengthens that case. SP+ ranks Fresno’s defense 49th and San José State’s 110th. Fresno has also allowed 2.818 points per scoring opportunity, while the Spartans’ offense has produced 3.524. I expect Fresno’s ability to limit scoring after opponents move into threatening territory to matter against an offense that has been more productive than decisive.
There is an opening for Fresno’s offense, too. San José State allows a 47.7% success rate and has stopped runs at or behind the line at a 12.6% rate. Bryson Donelson gives Fresno a way to attack that vulnerability. My expectation is that the Bulldogs can find enough rushing success to make Jayden Mandal less dependent on explosive completions.
The concern is whether Mandal’s rebound travels. He threw for 77 yards against USC and 316 against Sacramento State, and San José State ranks ninth in explosiveness allowed. Weaver, Carson Clark and Cooper Hoch also give the Spartans a legitimate passing answer. That keeps my confidence measured. Still, I favor Fresno’s defense to interrupt possessions and its offense to exploit the Spartans’ down-to-down vulnerability often enough to cover -4.5.
Injuries noted
Fresno State Bulldogs: Ryan Wilson (out for season) — Starting safety; reported out for the 2026 season after a non-contact lower-leg injury against USC, attributed to head coach Matt Entz and corroborating reporting.; Edward Fonua (out for season) — Guard; reported out for the 2026 season with a leg injury suffered away from football during the offseason, confirmed by Entz.; Brandon Ramirez (out for season) — Running back; reported out for the 2026 season with a leg injury suffered during spring camp, confirmed by Entz.; Harold Duvall (questionable) — Wide receiver with an undisclosed injury; the report says he left the USC game in a sling and that his San José State availability remained unconfirmed.
