The read
Northwestern closes its lakefront chapter Saturday night, returning from a bye to host Colorado. Both programs arrive with new offensive coordinators and quarterbacks establishing themselves in their current roles.
I’m taking Colorado with the points because its defensive front presents the clearest obstacle to Northwestern sustaining its opening-game offense. Colorado has stopped 38.9% of opposing carries at or behind the line and allowed 2.4 line yards. Lamont Lester Jr. has four sacks through two games. Those results do not guarantee control tonight, but they support a concrete matchup judgment: Colorado can disrupt the early-down production that makes Chip Kelly’s offense dangerous.
Northwestern’s offensive success rate was 61.1% on standard downs and 31.6% on passing downs against South Dakota State. Aidan Chiles delivered explosive passing production, but this is a different test for an offensive line that featured four players making their first Northwestern starts. I expect Colorado’s front to make sustaining that efficiency harder.
Colorado also has a credible way to support its quarterback. Micah Welch has 164 rushing yards at 6.8 per carry, while Northwestern allowed 3.3053 line yards in its opener. Brennan Marion’s run-first approach fits that opening. My expectation is that Colorado can generate enough rushing success to keep Julian Lewis from having to carry every possession against Northwestern’s experienced secondary.
The strongest argument against this ticket is Northwestern’s explosiveness. Colorado ranks 122nd in explosiveness allowed, and Chiles, Griffin Wilde and Joseph Himon II have already demonstrated big-play production. Lewis’s huge Weber State performance also does not erase his much quieter Georgia Tech outing. Colorado must sustain drives more consistently than it has so far.
Those concerns keep me on the spread rather than the outright upset. The bet rests on Colorado’s defensive disruption and a workable rushing matchup—not simply the possibility of a close game. At +3.5, I’m backing those strengths with the protection of a field-goal loss.

Colorado Buffaloes: Danny Scudero (questionable) — Scudero is recovering from a fall-camp foot injury. Deion Sanders said he did not know whether Scudero would be healthy, and receivers coach Rashad Davis said he might or might not play Saturday.; Kaleb Mathis (questionable) — A current injury roundup reported that Mathis dressed in street clothes and did not play against Weber State; no Colorado-week clearance or definitive designation was reported.; Hykeem Williams (questionable) — A current injury roundup reported that Williams dressed in street clothes and did not play against Weber State; no Colorado-week clearance or definitive designation was reported.; Vili Taufatofua (questionable) — Taufatofua was sidelined against Weber State. The current report did not establish that he had been cleared for Northwestern.; Yamil Talib (questionable) — Talib was sidelined against Weber State. The current report did not establish that he had been cleared for Northwestern.; Sam Gadie (questionable) — Gadie was reported among the defensive linemen who did not play against Weber State; his Northwestern availability was not established.; Demetrius Hunter (questionable) — Hunter was sidelined by injury in Week 2, and Colorado's current reporting did not establish his clearance for Northwestern.; Jose Soto (questionable) — Soto was sidelined by injury in Week 2, and Colorado's current reporting did not establish his clearance for Northwestern.; Taj White (questionable) — White was sidelined by injury in Week 2, and Colorado's current reporting did not establish his clearance for Northwestern.
Northwestern Wildcats: Jackson Carsello (questionable) — Carsello left the opener on a stretcher with a reported neck injury. David Braun supplied no Colorado-week update, so his game availability remained publicly unresolved rather than confirmed out.; Hayden Eligon II (questionable) — Eligon suffered a lower-body injury in the opener; Braun said his status would remain in-house until Big Ten play, leaving his availability against Colorado unresolved.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKMICAH WELCHRUSHING YARDS OVER 42.5
I’m backing Welch to clear 42.5 rushing yards because Colorado has both the matchup and the incentive to keep its ground game involved. Welch has produced 164 yards on 24 carries through two games, clearing this number’s required pace while averaging 6.8 yards per attempt.
Northwestern allowed 3.3053 line yards in its opener, giving Colorado a credible opportunity to create yards before contact. A productive rushing plan would also reduce the burden on freshman quarterback Julian Lewis against an experienced secondary. The limited two-game sample and potential for Colorado to divide carries keep my confidence measured, but Welch does not need another explosive performance to beat this line. A workload near his early-season average should give him a sound path to the over.
