The read
A sold-out Family Weekend crowd awaits in Fort Worth as TCU closes its nonconference schedule. Both teams arrive after emphatic wins, with new quarterbacks still establishing themselves.
I’m laying the points because TCU has a credible path to controlling both sides of the line. Through two games, its defense has stopped 24.5% of opposing carries at or behind the line, compared with Arkansas State’s 11.3%. Ansel Din-Mbuh has three recorded sacks. My expectation is that TCU’s front makes Arkansas State work through difficult passing situations often enough to interrupt drives and give its offense opportunities to separate.
Trey Owens makes the underdog dangerous: he has completed 72.3% of his passes, and Arkansas State’s 55.9% offensive success rate deserves respect. But his four interceptions expose the downside when productive possessions break down. TCU has also limited the damage on successful opposing plays, ranking seventh in explosiveness allowed. That combination makes me less willing to assume Arkansas State can consistently answer scores.
On the other side, Jeremy Payne gives TCU a way to attack a defense allowing a 44.3% success rate. Kari Ashley and Ed Small provide established receiving production alongside the younger receivers taking larger roles. Those roles already contributed to TCU’s recent results; the continuing receiver absences do not represent a completely new offense tonight. I expect the run game and that receiving distribution to give Jaden Craig enough options to sustain scoring drives.
The strongest objection is TCU’s uneven offense. Its 20.5% passing-down success rate and scoreless stretch after its opening possessions against North Carolina show how drives can stall. Arkansas State’s six takeaways are another real threat. Still, the Red Wolves have committed five turnovers themselves, and their West Georgia rout included two defensive touchdowns—production I would not count on repeating.
The early sample limits my confidence, but the matchup supports the favorite: TCU can attack Arkansas State’s defensive weaknesses while making its offense earn sustained possessions. That is enough for me to back TCU at -19.5.
Injuries noted
Arkansas State Red Wolves: Devin Spencer (out for season) — Running back remains listed out with a knee injury and is projected to miss the remainder of the season.
TCU Horned Frogs: Dozie Ezukanma (out) — Starting outside receiver is expected to miss his third consecutive game because of a head injury.; Jordan Dwyer (doubtful) — Starting receiver has a lower-body/foot injury. Sonny Dykes called him doubtful, and subsequent reporting said he was expected to miss a third consecutive game.; Zach Chapman (doubtful) — Starting edge rusher has an undisclosed lower-body injury, missed most of fall camp in a boot and had not played this season; Dykes called him doubtful.; Jamel Johnson (probable) — Starting safety missed the Grambling State game with a foot injury, but Dykes said he would be available against Arkansas State.

Props on this game
1- GARY'S PICKJEREMY PAYNERUSHING YARDS OVER 99.5
I’m backing Payne to clear 99.5 rushing yards. He has produced 221 yards on 34 carries through two games, an average of 6.5 yards per attempt, and this matchup should allow TCU to keep feeding him. Arkansas State has allowed a 44.3% defensive success rate, while TCU enters as a substantial home favorite with a credible chance to control the line of scrimmage and play from ahead.
The main concern is workload in a potential blowout, especially with Jon Denman available to absorb carries. But Payne does not need an extreme volume if his early efficiency holds, and TCU’s uneven passing-down production gives the offense another reason to lean on its lead back. Of the two nearby Payne numbers offered, I prefer 99.5 at -117 to paying -122 for only one fewer yard.
