The read

Friday night in Winston-Salem, storms rolling through ahead of a 7:30 kickoff that's supposed to clear into something warm and humid, ESPN has the window to itself, and the fifth-ranked team in the country walks into the biggest home game Jake Dickert has coached. Two unbeaten teams, one of them 2-0 by a combined 109 points, the other 2-0 by a combined 24. The scoreboard says this is a mismatch. The number says it by three touchdowns. I'm taking the points.

Start with where the market actually sits. SP+ has Miami at +25.6 and Wake at +3.4. FPI has it 25.741 to 4.105. Strip out home field on either one and you land right around 19.5 to 20.2. The posted number is 20.5. That's not a disagreement with the ratings — that's a favorite tax paid on a No. 5 ranking and a 77-point afternoon against an FCS opponent. There is no cushion in this price. Miami has to beat its own projection to cash it, and I want to know exactly how.

The usual ways a college football favorite builds a 21-point margin are explosives, turnovers, or possession strangulation. Look at each one here. Miami's offense is first in the country in success rate at 62.5% and first on standard downs at 67.8% — genuinely elite at staying on schedule — but it's 38th in explosiveness at 1.331. And the one thing Wake's defense actually does is deny chunk damage: 6th nationally in explosiveness allowed at 0.922. Miami will move the ball. Miami will probably move it at will. But they're going to have to walk it down the field, and long drives mean fewer total possessions, and fewer possessions is the underdog's friend against a big number.

Turnovers are the second lever, and they may be the most telling number on the board: Miami has forced zero this season. Cristobal named it as a point of emphasis himself this week. On the other side, Wake has committed none, and Gio Lopez has thrown 54 passes without an interception. Short fields and defensive scores are how 17 becomes 24 in a hurry, and neither team's profile is producing them right now.

That leaves possession dominance, which requires getting Wake's offense off the field, and that's where Miami's defensive résumé thins out. Their havoc comes almost entirely from the back end — front-seven havoc sits at 0.062 against Wake's 0.110 — and they have three sacks through two games. Miami leaned heavily on zone last time out, 74.5% of snaps with Cover-2 up to 36.2%, and they're running a reshuffled back end while they do it: Bryce Fitzgerald moved from safety to a starting corner spot, true freshman Camdin Portis and redshirt freshman Ryan Mack rotating, true freshman JJ Dunnigan elevated at safety. Zone rules break when a quarterback extends plays, and Lopez extends plays — he led Wake in carries at Purdue and sits 15th nationally in passing-downs success at 44.4%. The drives that are supposed to die on third down instead keep breathing and keep bleeding clock.

I'm not pretending Wake's defense is any good. Fifty percent of the plays run against them succeed, 132nd of 138, and Darian Mensah at 41-of-45 with eight touchdowns and no picks is precisely the wrong quarterback to meet with that problem. Miami is going to score. But Wake put up 38 in both games, and a game where the dog's offense functions is a game where three touchdowns is a lot of ground. Both schedules have been soft — Miami's strength of schedule ranks 104th, Wake's 80th — and the 61 points a game Miami is averaging came against a Stanford team that never reached the end zone and an opponent whose fourth quarter both coaches agreed to shorten. That scoreboard is doing heavy lifting in this price.

The last piece is behavior. Mensah has not thrown a second-half pass all season. Miami's starters have been pulled early twice, and the one fourth quarter that got ugly got cut short by mutual agreement. None of that is a knock — it's what you do when you're up 45-6 — but laying 20.5 requires a staff that presses with a comfortable lead in the fourth, and this one has shown the opposite when it could. Give me the home dog, the number that's a full point past what the ratings say, and a game script that asks Miami to grind rather than strike. Wake Forest +20.5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

QUARTERBACK

  • MIA's passing game is +156 yards per game

    156 YPG

MIA is throwing for 424.5 yards per game over two games against WAKE's 268.5, a 156-yard edge. That is MIA's widest separation in this matchup, and it sits on top of WAKE's own healthy passing total through 2026-09-17.

TRENCHES

  • MIA is +84 rush yards per game

    84 YPG

Through 2026-09-17, MIA has averaged 275.5 rushing yards per game over 2 games, 84 YPG more than WAKE’s 191.5. Both have produced heavily on the ground, with MIA holding the larger early rushing profile, but the sample is only 2 games.

PACE & SCRIPT

  • MIA's defense gives up 19.5 fewer points per game

    19.5 PPG

MIA has allowed 6.5 points per game over two games, 19.5 fewer than WAKE's 26. That is the sharpest contrast in this matchup — a defense under a touchdown a game against one giving up 26. Two games is a very small base for a figure that low.

  • WAKE holds the ball 12:13 longer per game

    12:13 TOP

WAKE has held the ball 28:36 per game over two games, 12:13 longer than MIA's 16:23. Those are opposite operating styles: WAKE's offense lives on the clock, MIA's works in short possessions, and whichever one holds decides how many snaps each side gets.

  • MIA is scoring +23 points per game

    23 PPG

MIA is scoring 61 points per game over two games, 23 more than WAKE's 38. Both figures are high, so the scoreboard gap says more about degree than about one side controlling how the game is played.

TURNOVERS

  • WAKE commits 1 fewer turnovers per game

    1 TO

MIA is at 1 turnovers committed per game over 2 games; WAKE is at 0 over 2 games. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-17.

COACHING

  • MIA gives away 55 fewer penalty yards per game

    55 YDS

MIA is at 27.5 penalty yards per game over 2 games; WAKE is at 82.5 over 2 games. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-17.

MISMATCH

  • MIA's passing attack against WAKE's — 424.5 pass yards a game to 268.5

    424.5 VS 268.5

MIA averages 424.5 passing yards per game to WAKE’s 268.5 over two games apiece, the matchup’s widest measured gap. That puts MIA’s passing production at the center of the contrast, but no defensive split shows how WAKE might disrupt it.

COVERAGE

  • MIA allows a third-down conversion rate 27.3 percentage points lower

    27.3 PP

Through 2026-09-17, MIA allowed 20.7% on third downs over two 2026 games, 27.3 percentage points lower than WAKE’s 48% over two games. Opponent identities, offensive styles and game scripts were not supplied, limiting any schedule-adjusted read.

  • MIA's secondary gives up 73.5 fewer passing yards per game

    73.5 YPG

Through 2026-09-17, MIA allowed 145.5 passing yards per game over two 2026 games, 73.5 fewer than WAKE’s 219 over two games. Opponent passing identities and game scripts were not supplied, so the comparison is not schedule-adjusted.

REPLACEMENT

  • Ny Carr (WR) is out for WAKE

    OUT

Wake downgraded WR Ny Carr from doubtful to out against Miami on Sep. 17, resolving his game status as unavailable. The absence hits Wake’s offense, but no replacement or workload split is supplied.

  • Luka Gilbert (TE) is out for the season for MIA

    OUT FOR SEASON

Miami ruled TE Luka Gilbert out for the entire 2026 season after an undisclosed injury before fall camp, leaving the offense without him against Wake. The supplied facts do not identify who absorbs his work.

  • Xavier Lucas (DB) is out for MIA

    OUT

Miami ruled DB Xavier Lucas out after an unspecified injury against Stanford, and Mario Cristobal said he could miss approximately a month on Sep. 16. The defense loses him against Wake, but no replacement is identified.

  • Ja'Boree Antoine (DB) is out for MIA

    OUT

Miami ruled DB Ja'Boree Antoine out against Wake after an undisclosed fall-camp injury, with his return expected later in the season as of Sep. 16. The defense remains without him, and no replacement is supplied.

SITUATIONAL

  • MIA moves the chains 13.5 more times per game

    13.5 FD

MIA is at 34.5 first downs per game over 2 games; WAKE is at 21 over 2 games. Those are current-2026 team-game results through 2026-09-17.

    Wake Forest

This is the same lever I leaned on for the spread. Miami's havoc is almost entirely a secondary product — 0.062 up front against Wake's 0.110 — and they've got three sacks through two games.

That's a front seven that doesn't get home, which is exactly the profile that a play-extending quarterback eats alive. Lopez led Wake in carries back at Purdue, he's off to 101 yards on 17 carries through two weeks here, and the whole premise of my read on this game is that he keeps drives alive against zone coverage by using his legs when the first read isn't there.

Seventeen and a half is a number I expect him to clear on broken plays and third-down scrambles alone, without needing a single designed run to hit for real yardage.

  • GARY'S PICK
    DARIAN MENSAHPASSING YARDS OVER 289.5
    NCAAFMiami· -115

    Darian Mensah
    Passing Yards over 289.5

    -115 · LOST · ACTUAL 220

    Miami

Miami's offense is built to stay on schedule, not to hit home runs — first in the country in success rate, only 38th in explosiveness — and that shows up as a lot of completions adding up to a lot of yards rather than a couple of long scores. Wake's defense is letting opponents succeed at a 50% clip, 132nd nationally, which is the exact matchup for a high-percentage passer to compile yardage drive after drive.

The risk is the leash — Mensah hasn't thrown a second-half pass all season because Miami has been up by four touchdowns at half both weeks. But my own case on the spread is that Wake keeps this closer than that this time, which means less reason for Cristobal to pull him early.

If the game is still live into the third quarter the way I expect, 289.5 is well within reach.
