The read
Saturday night at Davis Wade Stadium opens the season for both teams, with heat lingering around kickoff and Mississippi State playing in front of its home crowd.
I’m taking the points because Mississippi State’s ability to sustain separation remains the central matchup problem. In last season’s bowl, the Bulldogs produced more than 400 yards but repeatedly settled for field goals, with third-down and short-yardage failures interrupting their offense. They also allowed 45 sacks over the season and now replace four starting offensive linemen. ULM returns Noah Flemmings and Marcus Ross, giving it experienced defenders with a plausible route to disrupting possessions. At this spread, forcing some promising drives to end without touchdowns matters.
ULM also has a credible way to contribute its own scoring. Aidan Armenta finished 2025 against Louisiana with 311 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Nic Trujillo and JP Coulter return alongside him. Mississippi State allowed 186.3 rushing yards per game last season and conceded explosive passing touchdowns in its bowl. My read is that ULM’s returning passing connections can produce enough scoring possessions to make the Bulldogs keep earning separation throughout the game.
Mississippi State’s strongest counterargument is substantial. Fluff Bothwell returns after rushing for 677 yards, Anthony Evans III returns after 831 receiving yards, and ULM allowed 200, 221 and 212 rushing yards in its final three games. Sustained rushing success could give the Bulldogs repeated opportunities to finish drives. ULM’s 56 newcomers and rebuilt backfield also limit how confidently its productive finale carries forward. If its offense repeatedly stalls, that defensive exposure becomes the clearest route to a Mississippi State cover.
The assumptions behind my ticket are that ULM gets functional blocking and enough offensive balance to support Armenta, while some of Mississippi State’s protection and finishing problems carry over. Those are judgments about tonight, not established results. The unresolved fact that could change the decision is how much Mississippi State’s rebuilt offensive line has improved. A front already capable of consistent protection and short-yardage execution would materially strengthen the favorite’s four-quarter cover path.
