Texas State Bobcats at Texas Longhorns

An afternoon opener in Austin puts No. 5 Texas against a Texas State program beginning its Pac-12 era. Both teams bring returning quarterbacks into a matchup featuring new defensive coordinators. Texas State’s established passing connections carry my decision. Brad Jackson returns with Beau Sparks and Chris Dawn Jr., who combined for 149 receptions and 2,207 yards last season. Jackson also contributed 744 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. Those accomplishments came against different opposition, but the continuity matters here: Texas State has demonstrated ways to create offense through both its receivers and its quarterback’s legs. I expect those options to help the Bobcats keep answering across four quarters. Texas’s late-season defense gives that expectation a matchup basis. In the stretch ending with Arkansas, three of four opponents passed for at least 300 yards against the Longhorns. The defensive changes mean those breakdowns cannot simply be projected forward. Still, Jackson and his returning receivers present an immediate test of whether Texas has corrected its coverage and communication problems. At this spread, sustained offensive contributions from Texas State can matter well after Texas establishes a lead. Texas has a substantial cover case of its own. Arch Manning retains Ryan Wingo and adds Cam Coleman, while Raleek Brown and Hollywood Smothers bring productive rushing seasons from their previous schools. They face a Bobcats defense that allowed 29 points per game last season and has rebuilt its secondary. Texas State also allowed 27 sacks and has reconstructed its offensive line. If protection breaks down repeatedly, Texas can combine defensive stops with offensive scoring to keep widening the gap. My judgment is that Jackson’s experience, returning receiving connections and rushing contribution will keep Texas State productive often enough to stay inside +29.5. That assumes the rebuilt line supplies workable protection and the Bobcats avoid repeated empty possessions; last season’s production does not prove either outcome against Texas. Protection is the unresolved matchup that could change my view. I give Texas State’s offensive continuity more weight than Texas’s path to sustained separation, with modest confidence.
