Sam Houston visits Veterans Memorial Stadium for a Saturday-night season opener, with heat and humidity in the forecast. I’m taking the points because I expect Sam Houston’s returning passing connections to produce enough scoring possessions to keep Troy from sustaining separation. Grady O’Neill caught eight passes in each of the final two games of 2025, and Chris Reed scored both Bearkats touchdowns against Middle Tennessee. Landyn Locke has demonstrated connections with those receivers. Against a Troy defense returning only one starter, that gives Sam Houston a concrete way to compete throughout the game. My judgment is that this familiarity translates into productive possessions tonight; the roster turnover itself does not establish that Troy’s defense will struggle. Troy’s ability to sustain its own offense is the other part of this ticket. The Trojans finished both of their final two games scoreless after halftime. In the bowl, they produced 217 yards and no offensive touchdowns despite a defense that supplied a touchdown and five sacks. Those results matter at this spread because defensive resistance alone does not create a comfortable covering margin. Troy now has a new coordinator and four new offensive-line starters. Improvement is possible, but my read is that Sam Houston can make Troy work through enough stalled possessions to stay within the number. The strongest argument against this bet is substantial. Goose Crowder threw for 361 yards against Georgia State and 285 against Southern Miss, producing seven touchdowns across those games. Sam Houston subsequently allowed 460 yards to Middle Tennessee and 594 to FIU. If Troy protects Crowder and reproduces that productive passing stretch, it has a credible path to covering across four quarters. Donnie Smith’s 11 sacks in 2025 also present a specific threat to Sam Houston’s rebuilt line. Locke’s 121-yard, two-interception finale against FIU shows how badly the offense can stall, even with those familiar receivers available. My central assumption is that Sam Houston’s protection holds up often enough for Locke to turn those connections into scoring drives. The unresolved issue that could change this decision is the performance of the rebuilt lines: repeated Sam Houston protection breakdowns, paired with consistent protection for Crowder, would put Troy’s strongest cover path firmly in control.
