Miami (OH) RedHawks at Pittsburgh Panthers

Saturday afternoon at Acrisure Stadium opens a new season for both programs. Mason Heintschel returns to lead Pittsburgh, while David McComb takes his first collegiate snaps for Miami. The matchup I keep coming back to is Miami’s intended reliance on its running backs against Pitt’s run defense. Pittsburgh allowed 2.7 yards per carry in 2025, and its defensive staff has explicitly retained stopping the run as its first priority. Miami has meaningful protection against that challenge: four returning offensive linemen combined for 49 starts last season. My judgment is that Pitt still wins enough early downs to push McComb beyond the supporting assignment Miami wants for his debut. That is a matchup projection, not a claim that an inexperienced quarterback must play poorly. Pitt also has an established offensive partnership capable of turning those stops into separation. Ja’Kyrian Turner returns after rushing for 745 yards at a 5.3-yard average, alongside Heintschel. Miami surrendered 286 rushing yards in its conference championship loss, demonstrating how damaging breakdowns in its run defense could become. Its personnel changes mean that performance is not automatically today’s baseline, but I expect Pitt’s returning quarterback and running back to create sustained scoring opportunities against a defense still determining its best combinations. Covering this number requires them to keep finishing drives throughout the game. Miami’s strongest covering path is substantial: use its experienced offensive line to sustain possessions and attack Pitt’s protection to interrupt the scoring. Miami recorded 40 sacks last season, while Pitt allowed four against both Miami (FL) and East Carolina. Pittsburgh’s five giveaways in the bowl also show how quickly offensive opportunities can disappear. I give Pitt’s retained run-defense identity more weight here than a repeat of Miami’s sack production through its rebuilt defensive personnel. The assumption behind my ticket is that Pitt produces cleaner offensive possessions while forcing Miami into difficult passing situations. The unresolved question that could change it is whether Miami’s rebuilt rush can reproduce last season’s disruption against Pitt’s reworked protection. If it can, Miami has a credible route inside this spread. I’m backing Pitt to sustain the stronger combination of run prevention and offensive continuity over four quarters.
