Penn State has a strong competing path: establish the run against a defense that allowed 30.3 points per game last season, then force Marshall into unsuccessful possessions while chasing the game. Carson Hansen’s 952 rushing yards in 2025 support that threat, and the Iowa State contingent brings familiarity with Becht and the new staff. Penn State’s newcomers are not all starting from scratch. But four new offensive-line starters must turn that familiarity into consistent execution, while the new defense must contain Del Rio-Wilson. I expect Marshall’s returning offense to make that separation harder to maintain. The biggest obstacle to this bet is Marshall’s defense. Its finale against Georgia Southern featured a 24–6 deficit before late scores narrowed the result. That is evidence of how this ticket can fail, not reassurance from an apparently close finish. Marshall needs stops throughout the game; relying entirely on another late rally would be a weak foundation. The assumption carrying my decision is that Marshall’s offensive continuity translates into sustained possessions against this opponent, with enough defensive resistance to make those possessions matter. Boogie Trotter’s eligibility remains unresolved in the reporting; I am not counting on his availability, and confirmation of his status could change my assessment of Marshall’s secondary. The returning quarterback and receiving options give me the stronger case for Marshall at +23.5, with modest confidence because the defensive obstacle is substantial.
