The read
Saturday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium opens the Jon Sumrall era in front of a sellout crowd. FAU arrives with its coaching staff intact and Caden Veltkamp returning to run the offense.
The matchup I’m backing is FAU’s established passing connection against Florida’s reconstructed secondary. Easton Messer caught 104 passes for 1,052 yards in 2025, and his partnership with Veltkamp carries into tonight. FAU operated at approximately 21.4 seconds per play last season. My expectation is that their familiarity helps the Owls sustain offense while that tempo tests Florida’s defensive communication.
The four-quarter case also rests on extending possessions. FAU attempted 62 fourth downs and converted 66.1% in 2025. Those successful extensions gave its passing game additional opportunities to finish drives. I expect that aggression to help FAU keep answering through the fourth quarter, although tonight’s conversions still have to be earned. That is the strongest reason I prefer the points: a returning offense with demonstrated ways to sustain possessions and continue scoring after falling behind.
Florida has a substantial counterargument. Jadan Baugh returns after 1,170 rushing yards at 5.3 yards per carry, facing a defense that allowed 436.5 total yards per game last season. If Florida’s rebuilt offensive line creates consistent room, Baugh can support repeated scoring drives and ease Aaron Philo’s assignment. Veltkamp’s 17 interceptions and FAU’s five turnovers in its finale show how quickly the Owls could compound their defensive problems. Failed fourth downs would add another route to favorable field position for Florida.
My bet assumes FAU converts its passing production into enough scoring possessions and avoids another turnover collapse. The continuity and production are established; tonight’s execution is the judgment. The unresolved matchup that could change my view is Florida’s ability to pressure Veltkamp while retaining extra defenders in coverage. Navy demonstrated that mechanism against FAU last season. If Florida reproduces it consistently, the stalled drives and short fields would undermine the Owls’ strongest route to covering.
