Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at West Virginia Mountaineers

Noon at Milan Puskar Stadium brings Coastal Carolina to Morgantown for the season opener. Both programs are unveiling substantially rebuilt rosters, with Coastal also beginning under a new coaching staff. Cam Cook is the central reason I’m laying the points. His 2025 Jacksonville State sample produced 1,659 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns and 5.6 yards per carry, with documented work finishing drives late in games. That gives West Virginia a credible route to keep producing offense after taking a lead. Coastal surrendered 286 rushing yards against James Madison last season and has since rebuilt its defensive front with 12 newcomers among 16 linemen. I expect Cook to test whether that reconstruction has immediately corrected the run-defense problems. The offensive-line comparison matters more to me than the conference labels. West Virginia is integrating four experienced starters into a new combination under a returning staff. Coastal replaces all five starters while installing its new offense. WVU still has to make its combination work, but I give its running game the better chance of establishing repeatable drives. The four-quarter cover path is Cook helping turn those drives into touchdowns while Coastal struggles to sustain enough answering possessions. Coastal’s final two games last season both ended without a second-half point, including a bowl defeat in which it forced four turnovers. That history identifies the offensive problem its new staff must solve; it does not establish that the new team will repeat it. Coastal’s strongest counterargument is its receiving personnel. Robby Washington and Karmello English return, and Tristian Gardner brings 465 receiving yards and six touchdowns from Missouri State. Deuce Bailey also knows the incoming staff’s system if he gets the start. Those pieces give Coastal a plausible way to exploit the missed tackles and coverage breakdowns documented in West Virginia’s previous defense. Sustained scoring responses would make this spread difficult to cover. WVU’s own finishing problems are another obstacle: against Arizona State, it generated 421 yards but converted only one of four fourth downs. Yardage without touchdowns will not deliver this ticket. I land on West Virginia because Cook’s demonstrated production, the experienced pieces in its offensive line and staff continuity form the stronger foundation for sustained offense in this matchup. My assumption is that those pieces function together immediately and that WVU’s rebuilt defense limits Coastal’s responses. The unresolved detail most central to my bet is Cook’s actual workload: the depth chart puts him first, but a substantially more even backfield rotation than I expect would weaken the reason I’m backing West Virginia to extend its advantage through the fourth quarter.
