The read
Saturday night in Baton Rouge brings a sold-out Tiger Stadium and Lane Kiffin’s LSU debut. Clemson opens its season with Christopher Vizzina taking over at quarterback.
I’m taking the points because Clemson has a credible way to keep answering. Vizzina’s previous start against SMU produced 317 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a game that included four sacks. That is a limited sample, but it demonstrates productive play through disruption. T.J. Moore returns after 52 receptions for 837 yards in 2025, giving Vizzina an established receiving threat. My judgment is that those capabilities translate into enough sustained possessions to keep Clemson inside this spread.
There is also a defensive route to supporting those answering drives. Clemson returns Sammy Brown after 106 tackles and five sacks, while Kiffin specifically identified protection consistency as an area LSU needed to improve. I expect Clemson to interrupt enough possessions to prevent LSU from steadily extending its lead. That expectation carries the bet alongside Clemson’s passing potential; the preseason rankings and contrasting late-season records do not decide it.
LSU’s strongest counterargument is substantial. Sam Leavitt’s demonstrated mobility at Arizona State gives him ways to extend plays, and Trey’Dez Green returns after seven receiving touchdowns in 2025. If Leavitt escapes Clemson’s pressure and Green helps finish those possessions, LSU can force Vizzina and his rebuilt line to keep responding. Those offensive answers make the points more convincing to me than Clemson’s moneyline.
The central assumption is functional protection from Clemson’s five new starting offensive linemen. Vizzina’s previous performance does not establish what this new group can provide. LSU’s ability to consistently disrupt that protection is the unresolved matchup that could change my decision: repeated failed Clemson possessions would undermine the entire cover path. I’m backing Clemson to sustain enough offense, with that protection matchup carrying the greatest risk.

QUARTERBACK
Christopher Vizzina is CLEM's returning passer on 2025 numbers
5.72 Y/AChristopher Vizzina (Clemson Tigers): 2025 season line: 406 passing yards, 63.4% completions, 5.72 yards per attempt, 4-1 TD-INT over 4 games. He is on Clemson Tigers's active roster this season; the current season has no passing line for him yet.
Landen Clark is LSU's returning passer on 2025 numbers
8.38 Y/ALanden Clark (LSU Tigers): 2025 season line, thrown for ELON: 2321 passing yards, 56.0% completions, 8.38 yards per attempt, 18-8 TD-INT over 12 games. He is on LSU Tigers's active roster this season; the current season has no passing line for him yet.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
CLEM and LSU have met once since 2025
1-0 SERIESLSU controlled a low-scoring game and kept Clemson from finding much offense. This time LSU is at home, while Clemson has to travel for the rematch.
REPLACEMENT
Cole Turner (WR) is out for CLEM
OUTClemson’s other receivers will take the available routes and targets, with the offense needing to redistribute his role. Out this close to kickoff means I’m treating him as unavailable tonight, making this an offensive depth issue for Clemson.
Joseph Roberto II (LB) is out for the season for CLEM
OUT FOR SEASONThe rest of Clemson’s linebacker group has to divide his snaps and keep the rotation intact. Out for the season is settled, not a game-time call, and it reduces the defense’s depth in the second level.
Polo Anderson (S) is out for the season for CLEM
OUT FOR SEASONClemson’s remaining safeties must cover his snaps and handle the communication responsibilities in the secondary. Out for the season means there is no chance of a return tonight, so the effect lands on the Tigers’ defense and defensive-back depth.
Vic Burley (DT) is suspended for CLEM
SUSPENDEDBurley remains suspended indefinitely following his arrest, with no timetable for reinstatement. Per The Clemson Insider, Sep 1.
