The read
The night shift takes us to University Stadium in Albuquerque. New Mexico and Central Michigan open their seasons with both programs entering the second year under their current head coaches.
I’m taking the points because CMU brings back an offensive foundation I expect to keep it competitive: 10 returning offensive starters, including four starting linemen. Brock Townsend contributed 418 rushing yards and 145 receiving yards last season, giving that returning group a demonstrated contributor in both phases. The staff’s planned passing expansion matters here. CMU needs enough passing production to sustain possessions when New Mexico contains the run.
The bowl results deserve careful treatment. CMU’s four giveaways produced 27 Northwestern points, with three turnovers coming on consecutive offensive snaps. Those were consequential execution failures, but the resulting margin exaggerated how often Northwestern needed to drive the field. New Mexico’s close bowl loss carried its own warning: 204 yards and no offensive touchdowns. Its preceding San Diego State game also featured uneven offensive production, with explosive plays and overtime execution supplying the difference. That history makes sustained scoring separation the part of the favorite’s case I find less persuasive.
New Mexico has a substantial counterargument. Its defense allowed 112.8 rushing yards per game last season, and Jaxton Eck returns in the middle. That strength directly challenges CMU’s established offensive identity, especially with Angel Flores coming off a season of only 28 passing attempts. The Lobos also return four starting offensive linemen to face a CMU defense bringing back only three significant starters. If New Mexico controls those matchups throughout the game, it has a credible path to covering.
My deciding judgment is that CMU’s offensive continuity produces enough sustained drives to keep the points valuable over four quarters. I’m assuming the expanded passing game provides usable answers when rushing opportunities tighten, and that the rebuilt defense supplies enough stops. New Mexico’s actual quarterback deployment is the unresolved personnel detail most capable of changing my view. A rotation that delivers dependable passing alongside its documented quarterback running threat would put substantially more pressure on that defense. My conviction supports CMU with the points.
