I’m laying the points with Auburn because its offensive transition carries an important piece of continuity: Byrum Brown already knows the system. Jeremiah Cobb brings 969 rushing yards from Auburn’s previous season, while Keshaun Singleton and Jeremiah Koger have experience catching Brown’s passes. My judgment is that those connections help Auburn sustain possessions against Baylor’s reconstructed defense. The quarterback running threat gives that defense another assignment beyond stopping the backs. The other matchup carrying this decision is Baylor’s rebuilt offensive line against Xavier Atkins, who recorded nine sacks last season. Baylor returns only one offensive-line starter, and DJ Lagway arrives after throwing 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions at Florida. Those quarterback numbers came against different schedules, so they are not a direct measure of today’s gap. But I expect Auburn’s individual disruption to make Baylor’s offensive transition difficult enough to produce stalled possessions. Combined with Auburn’s rushing options, that is my case for covering—not simply winning. Baylor’s strongest answer is efficient passing from Lagway and a rebuilt defense that keeps Brown contained. Auburn replaced its entire starting offensive line, and its pass rush must replace substantial production; neither unit gets an automatic endorsement. Baylor can cover by sustaining answering drives even if Auburn controls portions of the game. I favor Auburn because Brown’s system familiarity and the returning production from Cobb and Atkins give its path more concrete support. The central assumption is that Auburn’s new blocking unit can turn that offensive familiarity into consistent execution. The unresolved matchup that could change my decision is Baylor’s rebuilt front against that line. If Baylor can contain Brown and disrupt the rushing game without repeatedly committing extra defenders, the foundation of this spread bet weakens considerably.
