The read
It’s home-opening night at the renovated Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, with Arkansas State beginning its season across the field. The forecast calls for a hot evening for this regional rivalry.
Memphis’ running game gives its offense a workable way to sustain drives. Jaylin Carter ran for 97 yards on 15 carries against UNLV, and the Tigers posted a 58.5% success rate on standard downs. Marcus Stokes contributed 223 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. I’m backing that run-pass combination to keep creating favorable situations against Arkansas State’s rebuilt front, giving Memphis opportunities to build separation.
The other piece is finishing possessions on defense. Memphis recorded six sacks and 11 tackles for loss, with four sacks in the final seven minutes. Those late plays ended UNLV possessions and protected the lead. That is why I’m willing to lay the points: I expect the running game to support sustained scoring opportunities and the defensive front to interrupt Arkansas State’s attempts to answer through the fourth quarter.
Arkansas State has a legitimate counter in Chauncy Cobb, who caught 73 passes for 797 yards in 2025. Memphis allowed 291 passing yards at UNLV, and Cobb’s suitability for short throws gives the Red Wolves a plausible way to move the ball before pressure arrives. Memphis also managed only a 22.2% success rate on passing downs. If Arkansas State interrupts the running game and makes Stokes repeatedly solve those situations, its offense could get enough opportunities to keep this within the number. That is the strongest obstacle to this ticket.
My assumption is that Memphis carries its blocking execution into this matchup and reproduces enough of its late defensive disruption. One game does not establish either as a weekly standard, and Arkansas State’s roster changes alone do not establish a weakness. The unresolved detail most capable of changing my read is Arkansas State’s starting-quarterback plan. Credible evidence that its chosen starter can consistently deliver accurate throws before pressure arrives would strengthen the Red Wolves’ best counter considerably.

QUARTERBACK
Marcus Stokes leads MEM's passing this season
8.58 Y/AStokes is creating chunk yardage without putting the ball in danger, though the completion rate says Memphis is not living on easy throws. Arkansas State tests whether that aggressive approach can keep producing full drives instead of relying on a few big completions.
