Toledo Rockets at Michigan State Spartans

Friday night at Spartan Stadium brings a season opener and a coaching debut on each sideline. Both teams are unveiling extensively rebuilt rosters. Michigan State’s offensive foundation is what gets me to the favorite. Alessio Milivojevic produced 986 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions across his final four starts, and he retains a demonstrated connection with Chrishon McCray. The projected offensive-line starters bring 110 career starts. Experience does not guarantee clean protection, but an experienced line working with a quarterback who has already handled starting responsibility gives Michigan State a credible route to sustaining drives. My read is that those pieces will work together well enough to keep the offense productive beyond an initial scoring burst. Toledo has 58 newcomers and only one returning starter across offense and defense. John Alan Richter’s recent experience came in reserve duty; tonight his responsibilities expand alongside a reconstructed supporting cast and a new offensive system. That does not make him a poor quarterback. It does mean Toledo must establish its offensive coordination while Michigan State can build around an existing quarterback-receiver connection. I expect that difference to matter repeatedly as possessions accumulate. Toledo’s strongest counter is the familiarity traveling with its new staff: seven assistants and 14 Mercer transfers provide an existing base of working relationships. If that translates into organized defense immediately, the Rockets can keep this inside the number. Michigan State’s protection remains the clearest obstacle to my ticket—Milivojevic absorbed 14 sacks across those final four starts—and last season’s repeated trouble protecting leads makes the fourth quarter consequential. I still give Michigan State’s combination of returning quarterback experience, a proven receiving connection and accumulated line experience the greater weight. I expect it to sustain scoring pressure while Toledo works to establish its new offense. That is the case for laying 10.5: an offensive advantage that can persist through four quarters, rather than a judgment based on the conference names.
