Fresno State Bulldogs at USC Trojans

Friday night at the Coliseum, USC has its opener behind it while Fresno State takes the field for the first time this season. The Trojans have already shown how quickly they can take control. Fresno’s defensive continuity carries the most weight in my decision. The Bulldogs allowed 18.8 points per game in 2025 and return seven defensive starters. That does not guarantee the same results against USC, but it provides a foundation for forcing stops and making separation harder to build. Rayshon Luke and Josiah Freeman also give Jayden Mandal established offensive options. My judgment is that those returning pieces can support enough sustained possessions to make taking 21.5 worthwhile. USC’s opener makes the four-quarter requirement especially relevant. The Trojans led 35–3 through three quarters, then finished with a 42–26 win after expanding their defensive rotation. San José State scored touchdowns on three consecutive fourth-quarter possessions. That is a concrete example of USC controlling a game while allowing its winning margin to shrink substantially. Fresno’s strongest route combines defensive resistance earlier with enough offense to remain dangerous to the spread late. The strongest argument against this ticket is USC’s ability to sustain touchdown drives. Maiava completed 25 of 29 passes, and five touchdown drives covered at least 74 yards. USC did not need a succession of short fields to score. Mandal, meanwhile, has played only 33 college snaps. If Fresno cannot sustain possessions and USC repeats that offensive execution, the Bulldogs’ defense could struggle to keep the margin manageable. That is a credible USC cover path and the biggest obstacle to this bet. The assumption behind my choice is that Fresno’s defensive continuity translates into meaningful resistance against Maiava and that Mandal keeps the offense functional. His limited experience alone supports neither success nor failure. USC’s planned defensive rotation remains unresolved: confirmation of a tighter rotation would weaken the late-scoring component of Fresno’s case. On the evidence available, I favor Fresno’s points, with moderate confidence.
