Gary's Take This spread is simply too wide for a game where the total is sitting at a measly 40.5 points. When the books tell you they expect a low-scoring slugfest, every single point becomes a premium asset, and getting 9.5 with a top-ten team like the Miami Hurricanes is a gift. The Buckeyes are the number one team in the country for a reason, but they are walking into this College Football Playoff Quarterfinal with some serious internal friction. Losing offensive coordinator Brian Hartline to a head coaching job right before the biggest game of the year is the kind of distraction that disrupts the rhythm of a high-powered offense. Ryan Day is a great play-caller, but that late-season transition combined with starting right guard Tegra Tshabola being doubtful creates a massive vulnerability in the trenches.

That vulnerability is exactly where Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain Jr. live. Miami's defense ranks 4th in the nation in pressure rate and 6th in havoc. They specialize in making life miserable for quarterbacks, and while Julian Sayin has been hyper-efficient this season, he is still a freshman. We have yet to see how he handles a collapsing pocket in a win-or-go-home environment. On the other side, Miami has the veteran poise of Carson Beck. He has been through the playoff wars before, and his ability to take care of the football will keep the Hurricanes in a position to strike late.

Ohio State's defense is elite, and they likely win this game on the scoreboard, but I do not see them running away with it. Miami's secondary, led by Bryce Fitzgerald, is aggressive enough to jump routes if Sayin gets rattled by the pass rush. Expect a physical, defensive battle where the Buckeyes struggle to pull away. The Hurricanes have the momentum coming off their first-round win and the defensive front to keep this within a single touchdown.
