Northwestern Wildcats at Purdue Boilermakers

The third round of the Big Ten Tournament takes center stage tonight at the United Center as the seventh-seeded Purdue Boilermakers open their postseason against a surging Northwestern Wildcats squad. Taking 11.5 points in a conference tournament setting is always appealing when the matchup projects to be played at a crawl. Both of these programs operate at a highly methodical pace, averaging around 65 possessions per game. In a low-possession environment, covering a double-digit spread becomes mathematically difficult because there are simply fewer opportunities to build a massive lead. Purdue possesses a historically elite offense ranked second nationally in adjusted efficiency (131.5), but they have been bleeding points on the other end, allowing opponents to shoot over 51 percent from the field during their last six games.

The Wildcats have already proven they can hang with this Purdue roster, having just played them to a four-point game on March 4. In that matchup, Northwestern forced the Boilermakers to rely on a massive outlier performance—a career-high 27 points from C.J. Cox—just to survive. Northwestern protects the basketball extremely well, committing only six turnovers in their recent win over Indiana and posting a 15-to-6 assist-to-turnover ratio against Penn State. By limiting empty possessions and live-ball turnovers, the Wildcats can prevent the scoring avalanches that typically allow heavy favorites to blow games wide open.

While Northwestern is dealing with a significant rest disadvantage by playing their third game in three days, the de facto home-court environment in Chicago provides the emotional fuel needed to push through fatigue. Nick Martinelli is carrying the offense at a historic rate, pouring in 52 points through his first two tournament games. Purdue will undoubtedly win the rebounding battle with their size advantage, but their recent defensive lapses—highlighted by surrendering 97 points to Wisconsin—make laying nearly a dozen points too steep of a price. Northwestern has the discipline and half-court execution to keep this within the number.
