East Carolina Pirates at UAB Blazers

The American Conference regular season concludes at Bartow Arena as the UAB Blazers host the desperately fighting East Carolina Pirates.

The spread is sitting at 10.5 points, which is a massive number to lay with a UAB team that has completely forgotten how to play basketball in its own building. The Blazers are suffering through their first losing home season in program history, sporting an abysmal 1-7 home record in conference play and a -7.3 average scoring margin in their own gym. Head coach Andy Kennedy has openly called their home floor "Bozo Land" due to their uncharacteristic execution issues. Asking them to suddenly flip the switch and win by double digits in a venue where they've consistently underperformed is a tall order.

East Carolina is playing for its season today. The Pirates need a win and some help just to qualify for the final seed in the conference tournament. Riley's scoring ability and the team's familiarity with UAB were evident in the first meeting between these two programs earlier this year—an 87-85 overtime battle that UAB barely escaped.

UAB undoubtedly has a clear talent advantage and structural edges on the glass, but both teams operate at a moderate pace (around 69 possessions per game), which limits the total number of possessions UAB has to stretch a lead into blowout territory. Given UAB's well-documented struggles to win comfortably at home and East Carolina's existential desperation to keep their season alive, grabbing double digits with the underdog is the clear value play.
