USC Trojans at Washington Huskies

The spread for this matchup is anchoring to the ghost of what USC's roster used to look like, not the depleted version taking the floor tonight. The Trojans announced the dismissal of their leading scorer, Chad Baker-Mazara, on March 1st. You cannot simply strip 18.5 points and 13 field goal attempts per game out of a college rotation and expect their top-100 offensive efficiency metrics to hold up. USC is already reeling on a five-game losing streak where they are being outscored by an average of 11.4 points per contest. In their last outing against Nebraska, the offense completely stalled, shooting an abysmal 19 percent from beyond the arc. They are a broken 18-11 team limping to the finish line.

On the other side of the floor, Washington presents a massive interior problem that this current USC rotation cannot solve. Hannes Steinbach is operating at an elite level, averaging 21.0 points and 10.6 rebounds over his last five games. USC’s primary rebounder, Jacob Cofie, pulls down just 6.8 boards a night, leaving the Trojans highly vulnerable in the paint. Washington already proved they can exploit this matchup when they went on the road in December and beat a full-strength Trojan squad by eight points. Now they get a hollowed-out version of that same team in Seattle.

The situational spot also heavily favors the home side. Both squads enter with four days of rest, but the 14-15 Huskies get to spend it at home preparing for Senior Night, while USC travels up the coast dealing with the fallout of a major roster dismissal. Huskies head coach Danny Sprinkle publicly challenged his team's focus after a rough defensive outing against Wisconsin, and a high-emotion home finale is the perfect environment for a bounce-back performance. The Trojans simply do not have the offensive firepower left to keep pace for 40 minutes.
