This Big Ten showdown at Mackey Arena features a classic collision of identities, but the gap in defensive quality is simply too wide to ignore when catching nearly seven points. While Mackey Arena is a fortress, the numbers reveal a troubling reality for the Boilermakers: their defense has quietly slid to No. 103 in adjusted efficiency. You cannot hide a defense that porous against a Tom Izzo-coached team in late February, especially one that brings the No. 2 ranked defense in the nation to the party.

The decisive factor here is the battle for possessions. Michigan State enters this game with a +12.7 rebounding margin, ranking third nationally. They are elite at cleaning the glass, whereas Purdue relies heavily on a jump-shot-centric offense (38% from three) with very little rim pressure (only 28% of shots are Close Twos). When Purdue misses, they are often one-and-done.
