Gary's Take Walking into the Breslin Center is never easy, but it’s particularly daunting for an Indiana squad that is currently redlining its rotation. While the season-long metrics suggest a competitive game, the fresh reality for the Hoosiers is a thinned-out bench. With Jason Drake and Josh Harris recently ruled out, and T. Maddox trending toward a game-time decision, first-year coach Darian DeVries is forced to lean heavily on his starters. That’s a dangerous proposition against a Tom Izzo team that thrives on physical, man-to-man attrition.

Michigan State’s identity is built on the glass, where they rank 1st nationally in defensive rebounding. This is the ultimate counter to Indiana’s offensive philosophy. The Hoosiers are one of the most 3PT-reliant teams in the country, but when those shots don't fall, the Spartans are the best in the business at ensuring it’s a one-and-done possession. By eliminating second-chance opportunities, Michigan State effectively neutralizes the variance Indiana needs to pull off a road upset. Jaxon Kohler should have a field day in the paint against an Indiana frontcourt that lacks its usual depth.

On the other side of the ball, the gap in efficiency is glaring. Michigan State’s #3 ranked Adjusted Defensive Efficiency faces an Indiana offense that sits outside the top 60. Jeremy Fears Jr. is one of the elite floor generals in the nation, and his ability to push the pace will eventually wear down an Indiana rotation that simply doesn't have the bodies to keep up for 40 minutes. I expect this to be a two-possession game for the first 30 minutes before the Spartans' depth and physicality allow them to pull away late. Give me Michigan State to cover the 6.5 at home.
