Gary's Take This installment of the Holy War features a massive talent and efficiency gap that even the Huntsman Center atmosphere will struggle to bridge. BYU is operating at an elite level, led by AJ Dybantsa, who is proving to be the most unstoppable force in college basketball right now. Dybantsa has scored 20 or more points in eight straight games and is coming off a triple-double performance in December. When you pair his individual brilliance with Richie Saunders' veteran leadership and a BYU offense that ranks 8th nationally in adjusted efficiency, you have a recipe for a blowout against a Utah team that simply cannot stop anyone.
Utah's defensive metrics are alarming for a program in a Power 4 conference. Ranking 206th in adjusted defensive efficiency is a death sentence when facing a Kevin Young-led offense that prioritizes spacing and high-percentage looks. We already saw this script play out earlier this month when #1 Arizona visited Salt Lake City and walked away with a 19-point victory. Utah's portal-heavy roster, while talented on the perimeter with Terrence Brown and Don McHenry, lacks the defensive cohesion and interior presence to handle BYU's transition attack and 'rim and threes' philosophy.
While Keba Keita's ankle injury is worth monitoring, BYU's depth—including Robert Wright III and freshman Aleksej Kostić—provides more than enough insurance. Utah is 0-4 against Quad 1 opponents this season, and they have consistently failed to keep games competitive against the nation's top-tier teams. The Utes will rely on Brown to keep them in it early, but BYU's relentless pace and superior shot-making will eventually pull this game out of reach. Expect the Cougars to dominate the second half and cover this double-digit spread comfortably. BYU Cougars -13.5 -110.
