Gary's Take The news out of Baton Rouge this week changes the entire complexion of this SEC opener. Dedan Thomas Jr. isn't just LSU's leading scorer; he is the engine that makes Matt McMahon’s ball-screen offense hum. With Thomas Jr. likely in a walking boot, the Tigers are forced to hand the keys to freshman Jalen Reece in one of the most hostile environments in college basketball. Reed Arena is never easy for a visitor, but it becomes a house of mirrors when you are facing Bucky McMillan’s 'Bucky Ball' system for the first time.

Texas A&M plays with the eighth-fastest tempo in the country and relies on relentless full-court pressure to manufacture transition buckets. Asking a freshman point guard to navigate that chaos without the stabilizing presence of the SEC’s assist leader is a massive mountain to climb. While Mike Nwoko and Marquel Sutton give LSU a formidable presence in the paint, they need a facilitator to get them the rock. If the Tigers can't handle the initial wave of pressure, the Aggies will turn this into a track meet before LSU can even set their half-court defense.

On the other side of the floor, the Aggies have a massive advantage from the perimeter. Rubén Dominguez and Pop Isaacs lead a backcourt that attempts over 30 triples a game at a high clip. LSU’s defense has looked respectable on paper, but they haven't faced an assault of this volume yet. Expect Marcus Hill and Rashaun Agee to control the glass and generate second-chance opportunities that eventually break the Tigers' spirit. This line feels like it’s pricing in the two teams as equals on a neutral floor, but without Thomas Jr., LSU loses their identity.
