Gary's Take Belmont’s offense has been rolling, putting mid‑80s on the board on elite shooting, but this trip out to UC Irvine puts that firepower up against a very different kind of resistance. UC Irvine sits in the national top 25 in the NET, and that’s a reflection of how complete they are: they’re big, they’re physical, and they don’t give you many easy looks at the rim.
Belmont’s edge is obvious on the surface. They’re scoring more than 85 points per night on excellent efficiency, with that higher offensive rating and a big effective field goal advantage. Tyler Lundblade is a problem on the perimeter, knocking down over 40% from three and almost automatic at the line, and Nic McClain is a steady engine, scoring efficiently and setting the table while also shooting it extremely well from deep. Add in Sam Orme’s scoring and rebounding, and this Bruins group can absolutely spread you out and put points up in bunches.
But UC Irvine has the kind of interior that travels in any game, and it really shows up at home. They’re winning the glass decisively, especially on the offensive boards, and they’re swatting shots at nearly double Belmont’s rate. Kyle Evans is the anchor there, finishing at a high clip and blocking shots at an elite level, while Derin Saran rebounds like a forward from the guard spot and gets this team into their sets. Jurian Dixon gives them a primary scorer on the wing, and with shooters like Jovan Jester spacing the floor, Irvine has enough perimeter punch to complement that physical inside game.
Where this tilts for me is the possession game. UC Irvine turns it over less, grabs more second chances, and gets to the free‑throw line significantly more often. At home, that usually means they can dictate a slightly more physical, half‑court tempo, force Belmont to finish over length, and grind out extra points at the stripe. Belmont will hit tough shots, but over 40 minutes those extra possessions and that rim protection add up.
With the line sitting around a one‑possession number, I want the home side that wins the rebounding, rim protection, and free‑throw battle in a building they know. I’m backing UC Irvine Anteaters ML -135 to wear Belmont down and find enough stops late to come out on top. The only real way this misses is if Belmont stays red hot from deep in a foreign gym and Irvine can’t convert their size and free‑throw volume into a real edge on the scoreboard.
