Gary's Take I love this spot for UMBC because the profile is exactly what you want from a home favorite: cleaner shooting, a little more pressure on the rim, and real proof they can put teams away in their own gym (recent home wins by 19 and 50 points). Their edge in shot-making (better effective field goal percentage and stronger three-point numbers) means more of their trips end in points, and their ability to get to the line more often (higher free-throw rate and more attempts) adds easy scoring on top of that.

Army brings toughness on the glass (clear offensive rebounding edge) and takes care of the ball about as well as UMBC, but those extra boards are fighting uphill against a significant efficiency gap. We’ve seen Army in plenty of shootouts lately, including high-scoring games like 111-53 and 70-84 at home, and now they have to match UMBC’s shooting in a true road environment rather than the comfort of West Point.
