The read
It's been 44 years since the World Series came to Milwaukee, and the American Family Field parking lot will be full hours before Jacob Misiorowski throws the first pitch of Game 1. The Rays are in town to spoil the party. I don't think they do it tonight.
The Brewers have been the better team all year. They finished 103-59, beat San Diego 3-1 and then swept the Dodgers 4-0. That made them the first team in MLB history to sweep the club that had swept them the postseason before. Now they're home, in front of a crowd that has waited a long time for this night.
The starters favor Milwaukee too. Misiorowski has allowed 3 earned runs in 21.2 innings over his last five starts, and Nick Martinez has allowed 11 in 22.2. Kevin Cash's plan makes sense for a seven-game series: Drew Rasmussen gets an extra day and Freddy Peralta is saved for Tropicana Field. The cost is that Tampa Bay sends its weaker option into the loudest building of the Series.
Misiorowski hasn't pitched deep this October, with outings of 4.0 and 4.1 innings, but Pat Murphy doesn't need length tonight. Aaron Ashby, Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe haven't thrown in three days. DL Hall, JoJo Romero, Dustin May and Kyle Harrison are behind them, and Logan Henderson is lined up for Game 2, so there's nothing to save. Four sharp innings from the starter could be enough.
The risk is rust. The Brewers haven't played since October 15, Misiorowski is on 11 days' rest with 7 walks in the last five starts, and Murphy admitted the young ace "hasn't been as crisp." The Rays are rested and rolling. They closed out Cleveland with wins in Games 4, 5 and 6, and Bryan Baker, Kevin Kelly and Cam Booser are all fresh. In what's shaping up as a small-ball Series straight out of the 1980s, one bloop or one stolen base can decide a game. Brandon Woodruff's surprise roster spot is a wild card with no announced role.
Still, Milwaukee has the crowd, a bullpen with nothing to hold back and the better recent form on the mound. I'm taking the Brewers in Game 1.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAT CHECK
Jonny DeLuca: .857 OPS in Last 15 Days
.857DeLuca is running an .857 OPS over his last 42 at-bats, 0.129 above his .728 season mark. That is a small sample, and a couple of extra-base hits can move an OPS that much, so expect him to drift back toward .728. His total-bases line in Milwaukee tonight is 0.5, which one single clears. For that bet, how often he makes contact on a normal night matters more than the hot stretch or his 11 home runs.
COOLING OFF
Yandy Diaz: .450 OPS in Last 15 Days
.450Diaz has a .450 OPS over the last 15 days, well below his .805 for the season. That stretch is only 40 at-bats, and a few weeks of soft contact on that sample tells you little about who he is as a hitter. The .805 is the better guide, and he should drift back toward it. When his props are shaded down because of the slump, the season number is the one to price from.
Garrett Mitchell: .560 OPS in Last 15 Days
.560Mitchell has a .560 OPS over the last 15 days, 0.211 below his .771 season mark. That is 36 at-bats, and in a sample that small a handful of hard-hit outs can sink the number. His .771 is the steadier read and the likelier place he settles. If his lines against Tampa Bay are set off the recent dip, the season mark is the better anchor.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Brewers are 2-1 vs Rays this season
2-1Milwaukee has won two of three against Tampa Bay this season, including an 8-2 win in the last meeting. Three games is too few to call this a matchup edge. Tonight's starters and current form tell you more about this game than the series record does.
STREAK
MIL have won 4 straight
W4Milwaukee has outscored opponents by 10 runs during the four-game run, so these were mostly comfortable wins. The sheet doesn't say who they beat, and four games is a short window. Streaks this size come and go, so price tonight against Tampa Bay on the starters and lineups, with the streak as a small bump in form.
TEAM RECORD
Brewers 8-0 in Jacob Misiorowski's last 8 starts
8-0Milwaukee has won every one of Misiorowski's last 8 starts, so the offense and bullpen have finished the job each time he pitched. Eight games is a short run, and a team record depends on run support and relief as much as on the starter, so a streak like this usually breaks at some point. Against Tampa Bay tonight, price Misiorowski on how he is pitching. The 8-0 is mostly a record of the whole team playing well behind him.
REGRESSION
Tampa Bay Rays are 25-14 in one-run games (.641 win rate)
25-14Tampa Bay Rays are 25-14 in one-run games in the 2026 regular season (39 completed games). They are 73-50 in their other 123 completed games.

2- GARY'S PICKJUNIOR CAMINEROTOTAL BASES OVER 0.5
Junior Caminero over 0.5 total bases at -165 asks for one thing: a hit. I took Milwaukee to win this game, so I'm not counting on a Rays outburst against Jacob Misiorowski. I'm betting on the one Tampa Bay bat that gets him from his weaker side.
Left-handed hitters have barely touched Misiorowski all year. Right-handers have done more damage, and Caminero is the right-hander in this lineup with 42 home runs and contact quality that backs up his slugging. He hits cleanup, so he gets three or four trips to the plate. Misiorowski also hasn't finished the fifth inning in either October start, so Caminero likely sees at least one reliever. That doesn't scare me either. Whether Pat Murphy goes to Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe from the right side or Aaron Ashby and JoJo Romero from the left, Caminero has hit both sides this season, and lefties slightly harder.
The reporting out of Milwaukee this week says Misiorowski's velocity is intact but his fastball has less finish, with hitters fouling pitches off and running counts deep. Murphy himself said his ace hasn't been as crisp. Caminero doesn't need a long at-bat. One pitch in the wrong spot is enough.
The case against is real. Caminero is 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against Misiorowski in his career, a tiny sample but not a friendly one. He also struck out four times against Gavin Williams on October 15, the hardest thrower Cleveland had, and swing and miss is the one hole in his game. Misiorowski led the majors in strikeouts. At -165 I'm paying for that risk, and I'd still rather own the Rays' best hitter from his good side than fade him.
- GARY'S PICKLIAM HICKSH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
Liam Hicks over 0.5 hits, runs and RBIs at -145. One hit, one run or one RBI cashes it. Hicks bats left-handed against Misiorowski, which is the toughest assignment in baseball this year, so the reason to back him has to be specific to him.
Here it is: Hicks puts the ball in play. He struck out only 55 times in 479 at-bats this season, among the fewest of any regular in either lineup. Misiorowski's October trouble, in Murphy's words and in this week's coverage, has been hitters spoiling pitches and stretching at-bats until he either misses or has to come over the plate. That is the at-bat Hicks takes every night. He's 1 for 2 against Misiorowski in his career, which tells us very little, but he has at least seen him.
The lineup spot gives him more than one way to get there. Hicking fifth behind Yandy Díaz, Jonathan Aranda, Chandler Simpson and Junior Caminero, he comes up with runners on base often, so a single, a sacrifice fly or a run-scoring ground ball all count. A walk that turns into a run counts too. The price is also cheaper than Aranda's at the same line.
The strongest argument against is the left-on-left problem waiting late. Hicks has been poor against left-handed pitching this season, and Milwaukee's late arms include Ashby, Romero and DL Hall. If Misiorowski hands off after four or five innings, Hicks could face a lefty in his last trip or two. His expected stats also say he's outhit his contact quality this year, especially for power, and he was blanked in three of his last six games. That's why this is the smaller of my two plays tonight.
