The read

The rain bought everyone a night. Now Game 4 of the ALCS is here at Progressive Field, the Guardians lead 2-1, and the Rays have to win to keep this from becoming a countdown. Saturday night in Cleveland decides whether we have a best-of-three or a team on the ropes.

Cleveland is opening with Shawn Armstrong, so this is a bullpen game, and that's where I like Tampa Bay. The Rays won 98 games for a reason, and this lineup created havoc to win Game 2, 3-1. Give them a parade of arms and they'll find one to get to.

Nick Martinez doesn't need to be an ace tonight. The last five starts haven't been dominant, with 10 earned runs in 23.2 innings, but there were only 3 walks in that stretch. Martinez throws strikes and won't give this game away. If Martinez gets through the order a couple of times, Kevin Cash has Bryan Baker, Kevin Kelly and Cam Booser fully rested. None of them has pitched in the last three days.

The rainout helped Tampa Bay more, too. The Rays had played only six games in nearly three weeks, and Erik Neander said a string of consecutive games could be a good thing. They also got a night to shake off a one-run loss in Game 3, decided by a go-ahead homer from an unlikely source. The Rays weren't outclassed in that game. One swing beat them.

The stakes favor the better club. A loss puts the Rays down 1-3. A win sets up Drew Rasmussen on extra rest for Game 5, with Freddy Peralta lined up behind. Expect Cash to push every button.

This isn't a lock. The Progressive Field crowd has already shown it can get on top of the Rays. The Guardians climbed out of an 0-2 hole against the White Sox, and their own late-inning group of Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis and Erik Sabrowski is fully rested too. If Martinez stumbles early, this becomes a relief-depth fight on Cleveland's turf.

For one night, though, I'll take the 98-win team at full strength against an opener. Rays even it at 2-2.

HEAT CHECK

  • Brayan Rocchio: 1.068 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.068

Rocchio has hit like a middle-of-the-order bat lately, a 1.068 OPS over the last 15 days against a .705 season mark. That's 34 AB, and a few extra-base hits in a window that size can inflate an OPS fast. The .705 is closer to who he is, so expect him to cool. His total-bases line sits at 0.5, so one hit clears it, and the price should rest mostly on his season level with only a small nudge for the hot stretch.

COOLING OFF

  • Yandy Diaz: .450 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .450

Diaz has a .450 OPS over the last 15 days, 0.355 below his .805 season mark, which is a real cold spell for a hitter of his level. It covers only 40 AB, and a few hard-hit balls finding gloves can drag a number that far in a window that short. Expect him to drift back toward his season form. Fading him on props tonight means betting on a 40 AB slump over a full season of evidence.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Rays are 5-1 vs Guardians this season

    5-1

Tampa Bay has taken five of six from Cleveland this year, and the most recent meeting was a 1-0 game that one swing could have flipped. Nothing here says who pitched or where those games were played, so the record doesn't explain itself. Six games is a small set, and a one-run finish says these teams play close. Use the series edge as background and price tonight off the starters and lineups actually taking the field.

NICK MARTINEZPITCHER HITS ALLOWED OVER 3.5
    MLBTampa Bay Rays· +120

    Nick Martinez
    Pitcher Hits Allowed over 3.5

    +120 · LOST · ACTUAL 2

    Tampa Bay Rays

I'm taking Nick Martinez over 3.5 hits allowed at +120. Martinez lives on contact. He averages three or four strikeouts a start and works off a sinker, cutter and changeup to get early outs on balls in play. That keeps his walks down, which is why I trusted him on the game call. It also means Cleveland will put a lot of balls in play tonight. This Guardians lineup makes plenty of contact too. Kwan, DeLauter and Ramírez rarely give away at-bats, and Kwan has three hits in seven career trips against Martinez, two of them doubles.

His recent starts say more about the hit count than the innings count. He gave up five hits in 3.2 innings at Yankee Stadium on October 7 and seven hits in 2.2 innings in Philadelphia before that. Both of those short outings cleared this number before Cash came to get him. Over his last eight starts, only two finished under four hits. Contact off his sinker has also been getting louder lately, and he's working off 19 days since his last start.

The risk is the hook. The outs line sits at 11.5, so the market expects about four innings, and with the Rays facing a 1-3 hole, Cash won't let him pitch through traffic. Cleveland's bottom half has also been quiet. Adell, Bazzana and Rocchio are a combined four for 33 in this series, and Martinez did not allow an earned run in 13 innings across his two starts against the Guardians this season. If he gets one clean trip through the order and Cash goes to the pen, this falls short. I'll still take plus money on a strike thrower facing a lineup that doesn't swing and miss.

  • GARY'S PICK
    JUNIOR CAMINEROHITS OVER 0.5
    MLBTampa Bay Rays· -175

    Junior Caminero
    Hits over 0.5

    -175 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Tampa Bay Rays

Junior Caminero over 0.5 hits at -175. I'll pay the price for the best bat in the Rays lineup to get four or five trips against a bullpen game. Cleveland is opening with Shawn Armstrong, and the reported plan is to aim him squarely at Díaz and Caminero at the top of the order. Armstrong carried a 4.58 ERA in relief this season and missed the late summer with a calf strain. After him comes a string of relievers, which means Caminero should see most of them only once. He hit 42 home runs this year, 34 of them off right-handers, and his expected numbers on contact line up with what he actually produced, so the season was real. He's hitting cleanup behind Díaz, Aranda and Simpson, so the plate appearances will be there.

The case against is loud. He's two for 11 in this series and struck out in all four trips in Game 3, twice against Williams, then against Espino and Smith. Espino has also struck him out in Game 1, Gaddis got him in Game 1 too, and both are available tonight. He's hitless in two career trips against Armstrong. Cash said it plainly after Game 3: the Rays have to hit, and the spotlight on Caminero keeps getting brighter. At this price I'm paying for a hitter who could be pressing.

The track record still points toward a hit. Before Game 3 he had at least one hit in four of his five playoff games, including a double off Messick in Game 2. Williams is not on the mound tonight. With a bullpen game coming and Caminero getting four or five chances, one hit is the right ask.
