The read
With rain in the forecast at Progressive Field, the Rays head into Game 4 down 2-1, needing a win to avoid falling one loss from elimination. Cleveland has the crowd and the momentum. Tampa Bay has the fresher late-inning arms, and tonight I think that matters more.
Cleveland plans a bullpen game after Armstrong, and the four relievers it leans on most all pitched Thursday: Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, Erik Sabrowski and Daniel Espino. The pitch counts were light (18, 9, 10, 12), so they should be available, but a bullpen game asks a lot of them on back-to-back nights, and Gavin Williams is out after throwing 70 pitches. The Rays' top late-inning trio of Bryan Baker, Kevin Kelly and Cole Sulser didn't pitch Thursday, and Sulser hasn't thrown in three days. If this is tight in the seventh, Kevin Cash has the fresher arms.
This team also knows how to respond. After Cleveland took Game 1, the Rays came right back in Game 2: "When they smell blood, they take it and run." Cash said it plainly after Game 3: they need to hit. A 98-win club facing a 1-3 hole is the version of the Rays I'd least want to see.
The rest of the series is lined up behind tonight, too. Drew Rasmussen can go in Game 5 on normal rest, with Freddy Peralta set for Game 6. Nick Martinez doesn't need to be brilliant. The job is to keep it close and hand the ball to a rested bullpen.
The Guardians have a real case. They're home, they've won five of their last six, and they already climbed out of an 0-2 hole against the White Sox. They have rested arms like Tanner Bibee and Joey Cantillo for the middle innings. Martinez is Tampa Bay's soft spot: 10 earned runs in 23.2 innings over the last five starts, and only 3.2 innings in the ALDS start. The Rays have scored 3, 3 and 2 runs this series, so if the bats stay quiet, there's no cushion.
One caveat is the weather. No postponement had been announced by late afternoon, but Stephen Vogt said it "does not look good." A rainout would give Cleveland's top relievers a full day off and change the math. If they play tonight, I'm with the Rays.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
STARTER FORM
Nick Martinez: 5.84 ERA over his last 3 starts
5.84Martinez has a 5.84 ERA over his last 3 starts and has covered just 12.1 innings, barely four a start. Runners keep reaching base: a 1.62 WHIP in that stretch against 1.09 for the season. Three starts is a small sample next to a 3.10 season ERA, so this could swing back. The bigger concern against Cleveland is length, because another early exit hands more innings to the bullpen.
HEAT CHECK
Brayan Rocchio: 1.068 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.068Rocchio has a 1.068 OPS over his last 34 at-bats, far above the .705 he carries for the season. In a sample that small, a few extra-base hits can push the number this high. His 15 home runs show the power is real, though the OPS should drift back toward his baseline. On a 0.5 total-bases line he only needs one hit, so the bar is low, and his season numbers give a steadier picture than the hot streak.
Jonny DeLuca: .857 OPS in Last 15 Days
.857DeLuca has been one of the better Rays bats lately, with an .857 OPS over his last 42 at-bats against .728 for the season. That 0.129 jump comes from about two weeks of at-bats, and short hot stretches tend to settle back toward the season line. His 11 home runs give real power behind it, and power is what a 1.5 total-bases line asks for. Weigh the hot stretch against the bigger season sample before backing the over.
COOLING OFF
Yandy Diaz: .450 OPS in Last 15 Days
.450Diaz has an .450 OPS over his last 40 at-bats, so he is rarely reaching base and the ball isn't carrying. His full-season mark is .805, which puts him .355 below his normal level. Forty at-bats is a short slump for a hitter with that track record, and cold stretches like this usually fade back toward the season number. On his props at Cleveland, lean on the .805 more than the last 15 days.
Junior Caminero: .749 OPS in Last 15 Days
.749Caminero has a .749 OPS over the last 15 days. That is solid production, well short of the .885 he carries for the season. The stretch is 46 at-bats, so a few hard-hit outs or a couple of missing doubles can account for a 0.136 drop. The season number is the better guide to who he is, so on his props in Cleveland, lean on the full-season level ahead of the recent dip.
BALLPARK
Shawn Armstrong owns a 5.71 ERA at Progressive Field and 3.50 everywhere else
5.71Armstrong's ERA at Progressive Field is 5.71, against 3.50 everywhere else. That split comes from just 17.1 innings in Cleveland and 18.0 elsewhere, which for a reliever is a handful of bad outings. Hitters are batting only .239 off him there, so a couple of big innings explain the gap better than the park does. Judge his relief work tonight on his usual form and don't mark him down much for the venue.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Rays are 5-1 vs Guardians this season
5-1Tampa Bay has taken five of six from Cleveland this year, and the latest was a 1-0 game, so at least one of those wins could easily have gone the other way. There's no detail on who started those games or where they were played, so nothing explains the edge beyond the results. Six games is a small sample. Price tonight in Cleveland on the starters and current form, and give the series record little weight.
REGRESSION
Tampa Bay Rays are 25-14 in one-run games (.641 win rate)
25-14Tampa Bay Rays are 25-14 in one-run games in the 2026 regular season (39 completed games). They are 73-50 in their other 123 completed games.

2- GARY'S PICK
NICK MARTINEZPITCHER OUTS OVER 11.5Nick Martinez over 11.5 outs at -132 asks for 12 outs, four full innings. I think he gets them. Cleveland has not solved him this year. He made two starts against the Guardians, threw 13 innings and allowed no earned runs. Seven of those scoreless innings came here at Progressive Field in April.
The handedness works for him too. Tonight's Cleveland nine has five left-handed hitters, three switch hitters and Jo Adell as the only pure right-hander. Martinez has been tougher on lefties than righties this season. The career looks are thin, a handful of at bats each, so I treat them as background: Jose Ramirez is 1 for 11 against him, Brayan Rocchio 0 for 4 and Adell 0 for 3. He doesn't walk many hitters, and that keeps the pitch count under control and gives Kevin Cash fewer reasons to come get him early. Twelve outs puts him into his second trip through the order and well short of the third, and that's the stretch a manager usually lets a starter finish when he's throwing strikes.
The case against is real. In his ALDS start at Yankee Stadium he recorded only 11 outs on 63 pitches, and the Phillies chased him after eight outs in his final regular season start. He has gone 18 days without starting. Cash has a rested back end: Bryan Baker, Kevin Kelly, Cam Booser and Ian Seymour all sat Thursday. Down 2-1 in the series, Cash has every reason to go to them at the first sign of trouble. Rain is forecast around the 8 p.m. first pitch, and a delay in the middle innings could end Martinez's night before the fourth is finished. Paying -132 leaves little room for any of that.
- GARY'S PICK
NICK MARTINEZPITCHER EARNED RUNS OVER 1.5Nick Martinez over 1.5 earned runs at +130 needs two runs charged to him, and the plus price is why I'm here. His recent form doesn't match his season line. The Phillies scored four off him in under three innings in his final regular season start, and the Yankees got two in his short ALDS outing. Contact against his sinker has gotten louder over his last few starts. Most of the runs he's allowed lately have come on home runs, and one swing can cover this line by itself.
Cleveland is home with a loud crowd, and three different hitters have homered this series: Chase DeLauter, Patrick Bailey and Petey Halpin. Ramirez has been on base constantly in the ALCS. Martinez is also coming off 18 days without a start. The bullpen adds another path to the over. If Cash pulls him with runners on and a reliever lets them score, those runs go on Martinez's line. A four or five inning start with two runs allowed fits both this ticket and my outs card.
The argument against is that this Cleveland lineup hasn't scored an earned run off him in 13 innings this year. The lineup has been average at best against right-handers and leans left, the side he handles better. A short leash cuts both ways, because fewer innings means fewer chances for runs to score. It's 59 degrees and cloudy with wind off the lake, which won't help fly balls carry. This is a price play on a pitcher whose runs have been coming in clumps, against a team that hasn't yet shown it can hit him.
